Mommy, I wanna be an actwess wike you!!!

I've been watching Extant and wondering how this girl got a prominent role in such a big-time network show, and then I found out who her mom is.

Don't get me wrong. In real life, she'd be considered very attractive, and she has fantastic hair. And network TV isn't exactly a bastion of great acting. But she's nothing to write home about as far as acting chops go, and she's not Kaley Cuoco or Yvonne Strahovski in terms of inspiring male fans to tune in.

Methinks the only reason she's not a waitress/struggling actress is the fact that Meryl Streep is her mom, and she has her mom's influence and connections working for her. While I suppose there are bigger nepotism fish to fry -- Will Smith's kids, Zoe Kravitz, Kelly and Jack Osbourne, Rumer Willis -- Ms. Gummer should be thankful she's not doing hemorrhoid commercials in between late night diner shifts.

Why don't you like Rumer Willis? I personally think she's quite good. Haven't seen a lot of her, unfortunately, but I definitely wouldn't call her acting skills non-existent.

But I agree on the topic of Grace Gummer. She's just not pulling it off.

reply

Punch Rumer Willis into Google and you'll see she's probably the most hated example of Hollywood nepotism in history. Her dad is a notorious dick, and it probably doesn't help that she looks just like him. But even more absurd is that she wants to be an actress and model, and that would never happen if her parents weren't Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

reply

Probably Meryl Streep knew it. That's why she didn't want her daughters to be actresses in the first place.

reply

You're too stupid to be here.

Consider suicide sooner rather than later.

reply

What a terrible actress. Jeez, it is so unfair. Nepotism.

What an insightful and intelligent comment. Thank you, wvsarafan!

She is getting small, supporting character roles. She isn't cutting in line like Will Smiths son, that's just ridiculous with him getting his own movies.
She isn't using her mothers last name either. When you grow up with an A List actor parent, you get a pretty good feel for how the business works and a lot of people follow in their parents footsteps career wise.

Jaden and Willow Smith are certifiably insane, epically insufferable little jackwagons who will be ruining movies for decades to come. I gave After Earth a real shot and tried to go into it with an open mind, especially because I love me some scifi. But I couldn't even make it through that mess of a movie. And as hilarious as their New York Times interview was, I couldn't read all 5,000 words of Jaden and Willow talking about time dilation, "prana energy," and how they write their own novels because other books fail to meet their expectations.

However...their parents *purchased* entertainment careers for their children. They financed the movies and the music. No studio is going to take a $200 million gamble, not even for Will Smith's kid.

So as absurd and obnoxious as the Smiths are, that's a different situation than Meryl Streep's talent-challenged daughter scoring roles that should have been given to actual actresses. Will Smith is financing terrible movies that wouldn't exist if his son didn't want vanity projects, and he foots the bill for his daughter's recording sessions and albums. Gummer, by contrast, uses her mother's influence to worm her way into existing projects, and sticks out like a sore (or wooden) thumb.
