He is the young Christopher Nolan of music films

His two films so far have been extremely original with great writing, directing and themes. Both center on music and the dreams people want and if those dreams are worth it. His two films have heen brilliant and he may be the next big quality director

He is the young orson welles, quentin tarantino, alfred hitchcock, akira kurosawa, fellicini of music films.

That's more praising Nolan than Chazelle.

That's the joke. Besides being a very competent director, Chazelle doesn't really share any similarities with Nolan, other than the obvious ones which OP has stated (and could be attributed to almost any great director). They're just there to shoehorn Nolan in as a comparison.

reply

Sorry, I was actually responding to the OP. I don't get this 'Nolan' connection. For me, Chazelle is one hell of a director (and writer) in his own right. Besides, I've never been a fan of Nolan, he strikes me as a competent director whose darlings are always the same: cerebral two-hour+ plots, made of head-scratching theories, spectacular explosions, car chases, and dark, rectangular, moody, settings ... I wish he could loosen up a bit and make something more flashy, happy, flamboyant for a change... or just a comedy.

One can argue that there is a pattern too in Chazelle's film, but I feel like Nolan always tries to wow his audience but there's always a distance between the viewers and the characters while Chazelle makes you feel like inhabited by the very passion and energy that drive the characters.

Whoops, my bad. I do agree with you on Nolan. I saw an interview with Tarkovsky some time ago and he said what made a great filmmaker was that they made movies solely to express their inner world, not the audience. Financially this can be a very difficult thing to do, but I think in Nolan's case its safe to say that he's trying a bit too hard to win over the audience.
