Well, she is right. Real Cleopatra probably wasn’t Arab or Black looking as people assume, as she was of Macedonian Greek origin (not to be confused with todays North Macedonia). Most likely she was a mix of Greek and ancient Egyptians as the article say, but I don’t know as I haven’t looked that much into her life.

As portrayal of ancient Egyptians in general, I agree they should not be whitewashed or “blackwashed” for that matter, as they were neither. I saw on Pinterest and some websites with claims that all ancient Egyptians were black, I once saw on Pinterest there are even claims that Greeks were black.

There was one period when there were indeed black pharaohs ruling Egypt though, but they were of Kushite origin. It was the 25th Dynasty that took over after the Nubian Invasion. Kingdom of Kush was an ancient kingdom in Nubia in what is now northern Sudan and southern Egypt. They also built pyramids and they are still standing in Sudan, only not as famous as Egyptian ones. They were a great civilization in their own right.

The Late Period of Ancient Egyptian history came to an end in 332 BC when Egypt was conquered by the Greeks. The Greeks formed their own dynasty called the Ptolemaic Dynasty that ruled for nearly 300 years until 30 BC.

If portraying for example Nefertiti or Tutankhamon, I think they should go for actors who are North African or Middle Eastern.

But what about “beautywashing”? Have you guys seen coins depicting her? She wasn’t exactly a beauty as she is made out to be in all Hollywood iterations. Actually we don’t know if she was a beauty or not, as there are a lot of different depictions of her. What I noticed they all had in common, she is mostly shown with big nose.

But I guess no one wants to see that. Except for me I guess, I would love to see historically accurate political drama with regular Cleo with big nose.

Not same old Hollywood epic love story of Cleo and Marc Anthony.

You're 100% right

I would expect it to be the only reason I would see it was because she is in it.

whitewashing?
Freaking idiots.
Entire cast of Hamilton is black. Cool.
But cast someone who isn't Egyptian a sin is committed.
F them.
