His accent

The south side, D4 accent is horrendous!

Also, all I can see is Seth Rogan....

His accent in the new Transformer movie is terrible also. I think he was doing a Texas accent by way of Australia. They need to stop hiring English, Irish and Austrians to play Northern Americans.

In the movie, he did say something along to Marky Mark if he has an issue of him being Irish. No time for character's back story for him, under than he went to the same school with the daughter briefly and he drives professionally.

Is almost like, let's throw in this line to justify why he has this accent. I could understand and believe that people who grew up in other parts of the country moving to Texas and not have the accent of the local region like Mark and the daughter. But, his was def. a lazy way out of an explanation.

It's true, I read an article the other day, almost, if not every show on TV has at least one actor from an English speaking countries of England, Australia, Canada and etc. A lot of them are doing a generic American diction. There're so many actors in the states. I guess global markets is part of the reasoning.

His accent wasn't consistent though. At first I thought he was Australian, then he said Irish and he sounded Irish for a bit... then American for a bit. Was odd.

reply

The worse his accent is, the harder it is to locate its origin. Yeah, it's confusing and horrid, but I believe it's bad on purpose.

Maybe it's meant to be Australian? Irish? British? South African? Any one of several cultures could claim it and THAT point makes the accent more universal and more accessible.

I'm guessing he just couldn't do a decent enough Southern American Accent so they went with a trashy one that no one could quite place.

While I found it grating and distracting, based on the opening weekend numbers it hardly matters.

I noticed the accent change right away the first time he fell out of character. I thought he was from Ireland with the accent and then that went away and came back and went away. Read his profile and he spent his life in Ireland so how come he could lose that accent? Weird. I did think he was good in What Richard Did.

Jack does a superb, 100% American accent. Check him out in Delivery Man, talking to Vince Vaughn at the bar.

They must have told him to deliberately go Irish for Transformers, for some reason? With really awful results. (Don't understand why they did that considering Mark, his daughter and the surfer guy all living in Texas, didn't have any accents on them either?)

reply

He hasn't lost his accent...

Is natural accent is a Wexford accent. He was probably forced to a do a generic accent for transformers.

OP judging by the post date, is probably talking about his role in Dollhouse, where he was supposed to be a rich southside Dubliner.

reply

Totally agree. It's ruined too many movies for me to count.

Why add that unnecessary additional level of complexity to the situation? Just hire North Americans for North American roles.

I'd like to punch casting staff in the face sometimes.
