I've been seeing recent candid pictures of him in skin tight t-shirts, and he looks skinnier than ever(he looks ridiculously young too). He's definitely very lean and toned, which is not gladiator-esque at all, even if many people agree it's a better look on men in 2012; it's just not a Spartacus body.
I know you can be super lean and often stronger than muscle-heads that look gross and beefy, but considering what we know about history and the bulky, beefy gladiator body/"diet", he just doesn't look the part at all. It's going to be very distracting(again)for the new season.
I'm going to assume that's about as much as his body can bulk up(with as much money as he's making, I'm sure he's hitting the gym daily and did all that he could!), so you can't really put blame on him; the people in charge of the hasty casting deserve all of that.
Time for costumes and make-up to work their magic on him...
