Will his career ever recover?

He made a good movie in Chronicle, then had the Fantastic Four debacle, which lead to him getting booted from his Star Wars film.

Now he has his upcoming Al Capone biopic with Tom Hardy which, I think, is supposed to be out next year. But there is no real buzz surrounding it and who knows what it will do for him professionally.

Chronicle was good though, and I like to hear success stories of aspiring filmmakers, so I hope he's able to get things figured out.

reply

He didn’t handle Fantastic Four very well but Fox shoved alot of their faults onto him. He’s a good director but that film was doomed from the start.

reply

His story reminds me a bit of Gareth Edwards.

Edwards makes Monsters, and based on the strength of that film is handed Godzilla and then Rogue One. But apparently he was in over his head with Rogue One and they had to have Tony Gilroy come in and help finish the film and get it into an acceptable state.

Now three years later he has no upcoming projects listed on IMDB or mentioned on his Wikipedia page.

It's weird that he's the credited director on two very successful films and yet now it seems like no one wants to hire him.

Fonzo doesn't even have a release date yet. Give it time and I'm sure it will generate buzz. How could a movie starring Tom Hardy as Al Capone not at least generate interest?

reply

We'll see how it goes. There have certainly been movies in the past that I thought were going to be big and then ended up getting only a small release on the indie circuit before quietly showing up on streaming services and DVD.

As for a release date, I just found an article where Trank apparently said it would definitely be out this year, and yet that's obviously not the case. I hope that doesn't indicate that the film is falling apart behind the scenes.

reply

It sounds like the Al Capone movie has been shelved indefinitely. Not surprising, given Josh Trank's history of being an incompetent, unprofessional twat on set. If even half of those Fantastic Four rumors were true (word too exists, that he made a mess out of Chronicle as well that was then thankfully salvaged in editing), he probably fucked it up so bad that the studio doesn't know what to do with it.

reply

Do you have a source for Fonzo getting shelved, or are you just assuming since it's not out yet?

I of course heard that the Fantastic Four situation was a shit show, but I never heard that the Chronicle production had similar difficulties. The movie turned out well in any case.

reply

There's no other explanation at this point other than it being shelved. How else can you explain a well-funded movie like this not even having a release date by now?

reply

Could be post-production problems.

reply

After Capone? I'd say... never.

reply

It's not looking good for him, that's for sure.

It kind of reminds me of Gareth Edwards. He also had an indie hit (Monsters), and then made Godzilla, and got handed Rogue One. But then he reportedly made a mess of Rogue One and he hasn't made another movie since, and has nothing listed in production on IMDB.

reply

Too bad. I liked Rogue One.

reply

ROGUE ONE IS EASILY MY FAVORITE STAR WARS THING SINCE THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY.

reply

I'd say it has to be the best of the Disney films, even though there's something about it that leaves me a little cold. From what I understand though, Rogue One's final shape is largely due to Tony Gilroy.

I actually liked Godzilla. I think that's an underrated film and definitely better than the shitty sequel.

reply

Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie, hands down

reply

Of the Disney-era, yeah, I'm sure that's right. Frankly it's probably the only one that could even be called good. The others are such a mess.

reply

i don't like the ones from the 70s & 80s too much, either

reply

My favorite is actually Revenge of the Sith.

reply

Rogue One still credited only Edwards as sole director tho'. At least that's what IMDb says.

reply

I know. Gilroy went uncredited, but at least from reports that hit the media, my understanding is that he came in and basically saved a production that was stuck deep in the mud.

But since you bring up Edwards' credit, it IS weird that he is the credited director on two blockbuster films that both made money (a LOT of money in the case of R1) and that were reviewed well, and yet studios now seem completely uninterested in him.

I mean, c'mon, he hasn't made a movie in four years.

reply

He cameo'ed in Episode VIII.

reply

you said that already, six months ago

reply

Well look at that, I guess I did.

Nothing has changed in that time. I wonder what that says about Edwards' career.

reply

Edwards now has a movie coming out next year. I didn't know he was in trouble with Rogue One.

reply

Here's Tony Gilroy talking a bit about the Rogue One situation:

Good for Edwards that he finally has another movie coming out. I don't think he's a bad director. Godzilla turned out pretty well, in my opinion.

I do think it's kind of wild that he is the credited director for a $1 billion movie that was well-received and it's taking him seven years to get another film out, though.

reply

Sounds like the production was quite a mess, but it turned out good anyway. Maybe the whole experience was so draining for Edwards that he needed to take a step back. But it's good that he has a new movie coming out.

I liked his Godzilla a lot. I loved that he took a more serious and darker approach. It's not a perfect movie but it's my favourite out of all the Godzilla movies in recent years.

reply

I have no idea who he is.

He he could walk up to me and I wouldn't have a clue.

reply

I doubt many people would know his face. But a lot of film fans have seen, and appreciate, Chronicle. And they also know about the total behind-the-scenes shitshow that was reported about Fantastic Four.

reply

It's been 2 years since Capone and that turned out to be a pretty bad movie. He has no upcoming movies. Looks like his career is not going to recover any time soon. That's too bad because Chronicle was very good.

reply

Wasn't a fan of Chronicle, nonetheless Trank clearly has talent as filmmaker. It'll be regrettable if he's been permanently derailed over a project as infantile as a Fantastic Four flick

reply

I never saw his Fantastic Four so I have no idea how bad it actually was. But I do hope he gets to make a movie again and it will be as good as Chronicle.

reply

I didn't see Capone but I do see that the RT scores are terrible, both on the critic side and the audience side. Maybe one day he'll come back with another fresh indie that wipes the slate clean for him.

reply

I gave Capone a chance but it was so boring and uninteresting that I stopped after 30 minutes.

reply

Was always disappointed that there was never a sequel to Chronicle.

reply

If M. Night Shyamalan can do it, so can he. But while Chronicle was good, it wasn't Sixth Sense good, so I guess time will tell.
