Maybe he should get into Comedy

It seems comedy is the only route right now where an actor of color has a chance to garner work and an audience. Just look at primetime comedy: Aziz Ansari on Parks and Recreation, Will Smith on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Dr. Ken Jeong on Community, Dani Pudi on Community, and Rex Lee on Entourage. What's great about being in comedy is that it seems easier to transition from tv to movies in this genre unlike drama. I think Dev Patel was hilarious on Skins and I think he has the best potential to find great roles that route, unless he goes with sci-fi which seems to be the other great genre for ethnic roles.

I think he'd do well in a comedy. If he's smart he'll pick an ensemble comedy next (similar to Love Actually, not a slapstick Aptow piece - I love Aptow's work but it doesn't feel right for him) or at the very least he needs to pick a role where he's more than brooding. He needs to be part of a talented cast where his character is a self-assured, dynamic leading man who is still finding his way in certain parts of his life. I say this because we've never gotten to see Dev play self-assured and dynamic. He needs to round out his filmography and he'll be taken more seriously for future roles.

Just my opinion.
