im just here to vent 'cause im trying to watch the film and her performance is pretty of-putting. she is obviously not native to the country - they might as well have put ellen degeneres in the lead role because it wouldn't possibly be worse. she obviously cannot even speak that language very well either, she sounds way different than all the other actors. so hopefully nobody ever tries putting her as a native iranian or whatever again.

Mozhan Marnò was amazing in the role of Soraya - Oscar worthy in fact. It's a very brave performance in what is an astoundingly powerful film. The story is almost Shakespearean in its painfully tragic events and Mozhan Marnò anchors the strength and vulnerability of Sorayas character, excellently.
If you're more concerned about dialectical discrepancies then I'm afraid to say the experience of watching THE STONING OF SORAYA M. was totally wasted on you.
She did a good job acting BUT she did have a bit of an accent... She speaks Farsi but as an Iranian myself, one can clearly tell she's not fully comfortable speaking it. She was no where near as bad as Jim Caviezel :P
shareWell I thought Jim was supposed to be semi-bad because he was supposed to have a French accent on top of his Farsi. I don't speak a lick of farsi but I could detect a French accent in it when he spoke, if that's even possible. (possible for me to notice, I mean.)
As for Mozhan, I thought she was a great actress. I would always look forward to the scenes she was in. She seemed so real to me. As opposed to the actress who played the aunt, Shohreh -- she was melodramatic and over the top, I felt, even though she's the big star. But MM's Soraya just had such this vibe of learned helplessness about her, like a jelly fish being carried along by the sea - not by choice or will, but passivity due to deeply ingrained sense of powerlessness. Then I watched some interview with the actress, and she was nothing like her character, (very animated and vivacious) which demonstrated to me that it was all totally intentional, which makes it even more genius. (as in, she's not just 'like that' naturally.)
Honestly you are an idiot. She IS iranian. She was fantastic in the Stoning and her performance was indeed oscar worthy. In the end, you can feel her emotion/pain and im glad i discovered her through that movie. She should get more movie and a lead role, instead of casting typical blondie like Charlize or sucky Kristen Stew. She was fantastic in her role.
shareShe's not Iranian! She is an American of Iranian descent. Being of Iranian descent does NOT make her fluent in a language. Living in Iran for a few months may have helped her prepare for the role, but it still does NOT make her Iranian or fluent.
My lineage is 100% German. That doesn't make me a German citizen. Doesn't mean I know anything about the country either. Do you expect me to speak fluent German too? Stop being silly.
