it seems unless she is doing a bit gimmick or else supported by other cast members in a property with built in fans (hunger games or men) she is box office poison

If she didn't attach herself to a popular franchise with mandatory sequels she would already be forgotten. She'll be as obscure as Kristen Stewart in a few years. Then when she's 40 she'll make a comeback with mature drama roles. Hollywood just don't have time for actresses stuck in the middle of life.

the times she took leads (joy, Serena, red sparrow, passengers) she fails.
Hence why the real roles, like Itonya go to real actresses who can actually get into character, not simply play herself over and over again.
I looked up "type of acting", but they were all too deep and advanced for Jlaw.
she's def in the "play yourself with gimmicks" school of acting.
That's just it with her type. She's a movie star, not an actress, despite what awards they throw at her. Her fan base is mostly young people, and they want to watch fun bullshit movies. They're not gonna line up to pay to watch her in some serious drama. That's something adults do. When her fanbase is all growed up, they're gonna want her to make those movies. No matter what roles she takes her career is gonna be in limbo. It's clear they're trying to craft her into a Meryl Streep replacement but that's never gonna take. There's an open vacancy for new American Sweetheart, i'm not sure why she's not jumping on that. She should be cranking out romcoms right now. Then you switch gears into drama when your looks start to go. But she's all trying to prove something.
