Talking about Gender Pay Inequality

Wasn’t Jennifer Lawrence the one who complained about Gender Pay Inequality only recently? Well, if the information on imdb.com is correct (and usually it is), she got 20 Million Dollars for her part in “Passengers”, while Chris Pratt got ‘only’ 12 Million, though he has much more screen time. I don’t hear anybody complaining now …

Don't look now - - but it kinda sounds like you're complaining - -

1. Her essay was less about gender pay inequity and more about one of the reasons behind it: that women, unlike men, are under pressure to be likeable and therefore don't fight for themselves the way men naturally do.

2. In hacked private emails, even Sony executives admitted to each other that she was ripped off in American Hustle.

3. When pay negotiations were going on for Passengers, she had far more box office success and awards recognition than Pratt. That is the basis for pay in movies, and after having learned her lesson on American Hustle, she aggressively fought for her pay just the way male actors do.

4. When have you ever made a post whining about a man making more than a woman? I'd bet: NEVER.

No, she wasn't.

If you know how to use the internet, why did you start out with an uninformed opinion question?

I don’t hear anybody complaining now …
There's actually been quite a few people complaining about it, and in just the same way you are: To try and discredit Jennifer's original editorial about her poor negotiating skills that were based on how she didn't want to be perceived by the people she was negotiating with, and how that hurts us women in general because of how society is when it comes to this sort of thing.

No, she wasn't.  Yes, she was.

1 & 2 don't need any comment as point is right on.

The reality is the same in sports and the analogy should follow, except you don't usually have men and women competing for salaries in sports. Only sport where the discussion is relevant that I know of is tennis.

The question is who brings in the money. Why do we have million dollar salries to some athlete who is not as good as he was last year? b/c it is how many people they can bring into the stands, how many viewers they can capture on the TV.

Exactly the same as in the movies. If we stick with American Hustle, for instance, the person who got ripped off was Amy Adams, not JLaw. JLaw got the same money as she brings in more viewers of the movie than Amy Adams does. Sad for Amy b/c she is a great actress and I thought the scenes between JLaw and Amy were the best acting by JLaw in that movie, with the rest of her acting in that movie was okay to middling.

But back to tennis. Women tennis used to get less purse than men's and it was argued that men had to win best of 5 whereas women only had to win best of 3, so men worked harder. But the reality is who brings in the dollars to the sport, and on that basis, women were on an equal footing as men, so they fought and eventually won an equal purse.

With that said, movies are a bit different b/c you have to negotiate every movie individually and separately, and need to project and speculate as to how it is all going to fall into place. Not an easy task.

And as for Passengers, you are right, she has more box office cache than Chris Pratt, and it is that fact, plus something I've long believed, that Sony had to make good to her for the controversy around the email leaks about her pay in AH. She could throw that in Sony's face in her negotiations too.

She could throw that in Sony's face in her negotiations too.Actually she did and also threatened to leave along with the director unless paid $20m.
