Bad News On The Captain Marvel Front

Sources tell Variety that Brie Larson is in talks to play Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.

Hopefully, these are premature or there's another place in the MCU for Yvonne.

Many people said they would cast an actress under 30, and Brie makes sense with her recent Oscar win. I also hope Yvonne is cast in another Marvel role someday. I'm sure there are other great roles besides Captain Marvel.

reply

I've been saying since the beginning that the role would go to someone under 30. If Marvel has plans of making it a franchise and producing movies into the next decade, they weren't going to cast it with a woman already in her mid 30's before the first movie even goes into production.

I didn't know what Yvonne's fans were smoking by thinking they would. She's attractive. She's athletic. But, Marvel's casting is about the present and the future.

They can be a little bit more flexible with the ages of male actors, but that's been the story of Hollywood for years.

Nothing nearly as strong as the Ronda Rousey crowd's been smoking.

The key, though to why Yvonne (and Emily Blunt for that matter) were good for the role was the diversified resumes they've already built up with some action experience. Blunt had her stint on Edge of Tomorrow (and damn near stole the movie from Tom Cruise, not an easy feat), and of course Yvonne's had plenty of action experience with Chuck and 24. And just as important, neither of them are bigger than the role they'll play. That's why you don't have a Charlize Theron or a Jennifer Lawrence in this movie.

I guess the question becomes will Marvel meet Brie's almost-certain bump in pay after winning the Oscar.

Here's some fan art with Brie in the famous Captain Marvel outfit.

So upset that they picked Brie Larson instead of Yvonne Strahovski.

I guess Yvonne wasn't quite psycho-liberal enough, like Brie is.

And yet Robert Downey Jr was well into his 40s when he was cast as Iron Man.

That really pisses me off. I'm not saying you're wrong, because you were obviously correct, but the blatant double standard is just aggravating.

reply

Yeah the double standard is so frustrating. Great roles for actresses over 30 are just so few and far between, but men can slowly build their careers. Bryan Cranston is the perfect example.

reply

They were probably thinking she's an under 30 Oscar winner, but hey that's just a wild guess.

I know I'm a vampire, Snookie.

RDJ as Iron Man in his 40s (now 50s)
Mark Ruffalo as Hulk in his 40s
Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther (will be 40 this year)

All very talented men, but I'm almost positive you won't find Oscar statuettes in any of their houses (and no I'm not counting nominations).
