There's a definite resemblance. Greta Gerwig is what Helen Slater would have looked like if the boob fairy hadn't skipped over her house when she was a kid.

Helen Slater was a godawful actress with no range. She was very bangable in that 80s bland pretty girl way.
Great Garwig is like the indie version of her. A better actress, but not nearly good enough to merit the many indie roles she gets.
Totally agree it's one of the first things I thought about when I watched Frances Ha.
Both have a Doe like quirky innocence about them which I find very appealing.
