Nudity and talent

It annoys me to no end that many people there is some kind of negative correlation between these two things. At best there is NO correlation, and there might be a POSITIVE one--there are certain sexual roles that really require nudity, and taking those roles but maintaining a "no-nudity" cause is like playing a Brit but refusing to do a British accent!

Besides, NOT doing nudity doesn't make any actress talented. Aside from Jennifer Lawrence and Brie Larsen (so far) and Meryl Streep (in the earlier generation), most of your talented actresses have done nude scenes. As for the ones that won't (Jessica Alba, Megan Fox) even when the role clearly calls for it, I suspect that it is because if they DID do nudity, people might realize they have all the raw talent of your average porn star.

Anyway, you can see that with Rooney and her sister Kate. They're both cute as hell, but Rooney has done all the nude scenes AND has all the talent, while Kate recently stepped into the, uh, Jessica Alba role in "The Fantastic Four"

Among others reasons, I think people's/audiences perception of nudity in films subconsciously plays a bigger part in actors not wanting to do nudity than we'd like to think. To different extent of course depending what part of the world you are from. I come from a country where films with nudity would most likely get banned. I find it so annoying, restricting and such narrow-minded thinking. People find it really embarrassing. These guys don't have a problem with car explosions and bombs going off in movies, but a sex scene and nudity is the thing that shocks them . For actors, it's a choice of course and I can empathise with the fact that you're baring yourself out there completely and hence don't want to do it. But if the nudity isn't gratuitous, isn't being done for the wrong reasons but is an important part of the film or the scene and it really calls for it, then I think actors should do right by it and not compromise. I feel they need to keep in mind that they're telling someone else's story. If they refuse knowing the importance of it then maybe they're not right for the part. I wish audiences were more empathetic and encouraging and didn't make a fuss about it. I agree with Rooney's opinion on this that it's only body parts at the end of day, we've all got them, and like her even I don't get what's so damn shocking about it. People need to grow up and be mature about it and not make it this big thing, which it isn't.

I don't think doing nude scenes or not really speaks to your true acting ability.

"there are certain sexual roles that really require nudity"

Yet many sexually charged roles and films were successfully done for several decades before nudity started to become common in the late 1960s. I suppose they accomplished that with good writing, directing, and acting.

The reality is there are very few movies made which require nudity and all to often it thrown in as a producer's gimmick to try and sell tickets and often times when that is the reason it is done it will hurt the film because it is just crammed in and doesn't help the story and will sometimes hurt it because it seems to artificial. Some of the most ridiculous examples you can find are the series that are made for pay channels like Cinemax. I think it was a series called Strike Back which was probably above average but which would have a mandatory female nude scene every episode which became a joke with my wife and I because you would see some female character pop-up and it was like that's the one that's going to boink the main guy this week... and that is pretty much what happened even when there was no real reason for them to do anything it was just a gimmick.

That can happen in movies as well and when it does it hurts the actresses reputation. One could argue that it does because when the tits for a tickets happens it tends to be in below average stories and being a below average movie isn't going to help your reputation.

I agree Thomas998. The female nudity in Logan was extremely pointless and the movie wouldn't be any different without it. I do like Logan but that scene where the girl flashes her boobs for like 4 seconds was really pointless. Now the nudity in Titanic served a purpose (honestly I haven't seen Titanic since it came out but do remember how her posing nude for the painting how it had served the story. Then again there is also these unrated cuts of some movies like the Dukes of Hazard movie where you just put some nudity into a 4 second scene like the one I mentioned earlier.
