Pronunciation

I've heard ppl say X(z)avier stess on X & also just zavier like the X just wonuds like a z. I was wondering if anyone knew how he pronounced it or what the correct pronunciation is?

reply

Xavier Samuel and David Slade, the Eclipse director, were on a radio show together and Samuel said it's usually ZAY-vier. And the director said he calls him Excalibur.

And how are you supposed to pronounce the last part, the VIER? I'm french, and I know how to pronounce it right since I do believe it's a french name, but how is it supposed to sound in english?

reply

I think it rhymes with saviour.

reply

Zayviour.

Nice. He should change his name to Zaviour, it would be a lot less complicated for all the english speaking people of the world. :P

reply

actually, Xavier is always pronounced like Zayviour... except in X-Men terms... where Professor X is pronounced EX-avier.
In English speaking countries, X is always pronounced with a zzz sound when its the first letter in a word. like xylophone or xenophobe for example.

I knew a Xavier growing up & it was X+zavier - like strong X sound not spelled that way! LOL!
He had a bro named Dylen which was pron DYE+len like hair dye not like Dill+un like normally it's pron.
So who knows?!
I think Donnie Wahlberg's son is also pron w/ the hard X?!

reply

My father went to school in France so he has a lot of strange little pronunciations which I found weird eg Cabinet -> Cabinay. He pronounces Xavier as "Zah-vi-air" but I'm personally not sure how true to life this is.

Sounds very French to me! & beautiful!
Like Jose in Spanish is Ho + zay but in French I think you pron the J.
Also Mario in like Canada they say a hard a Mare + e + o but in Spanish & American English is usually Marr + e + o.
Alexei in Russian I believe is pron like Aleckz + yay where in America we usually say Ah + lex + ee.
IDK? It all get confusing to me sometimes!
