Her 'stupid quote.'

''I have no interest in becoming really famous. It's easy to forget sometimes that it's a fairly stupid profession. It's basically glorified make-believe. It's always been my passion, but let's face it: I'm doing the same thing I was when I was 3 years old and getting tutus.''

Ungrateful. Foolish. Spoiled. Bratty.

Maybe you need to learn why it is considered an art form, before you open your mouth, and make such a public declaration. I have a feeling that Sir Ben Kingsley wasn't on the set with you the day you made such a "little girl" statement.

I've seen her work. She certainly ain't defining Pi.

to be fair - it is only an attempt at modesty and she is basically right even if articulariting that in such as interview (or at all?) seems to denigrate your coworkers.

I have more issue with the "i have no interest in becoming really famous" bit.

*You're not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here*

An "attempt at modesty"?!?!?! "she is basically right"?!?!

Are you kidding?

Modesty would involve being self-denigrating, not shooting down the profession that takes just as much training, and hard work as any other. Not too mention the amount of luck and good fortune (which she was able to 'step into' at such a young age) required.

"A stupid profession"?!?! What do you do for a living, where it's justified to dismiss another's vocation? Are you an actor, or in the arts? Are you in a position where you call label a job as stupid? I'm wondering what makes you so special?

Not looking for a fight here, but you really need to take a step back. Granted you cant tell inflection from posts, but you sound very angry and argumentative.

But just take acting at its singlemost basic level - A person pretending to be someone else. Yes, its a crude thought, but thats all she meant. Acting is like make believe in the way. Im not going to sit here and respond to all the words you put into amoammo's mouth, but there are MANY actors out there that are paid millions of dollars for the simple act of pretending. Whether your as good as Streep or as bad as Alba, at its basic level, thats all youre doing.

"Acting is like make believe in the way."

Could you clarify the point you are trying to make? I'm not really sure what it may be.

If I'm coming across a little strong, it's only because I'm insulted by the simplification of a craft and an art form that is getting a bum rap by amoammo, yourself, and Ms. Thirby. No, I'm not sitting at my computer, enraged and looking for a cyber-brawl. There is no pulsating vein at my temples, ready to explode. I'm just passionate about what I do (I am in the arts), and my post(s) only serve as a way to vent out my frustrations with people who haven't "walked a mile in someone else's shoes," and feel they can flippantly dismiss something that I very hold dear to me (and what I've spent the bulk of my adult life committed to).

You can take most occupations, and simplify them in a dismissive or irrelevant way. I try not to do that with things I know little about. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but attempting to broaden our knowledge, enriches our understanding, and provides deeper insight into ourselves and the world around us.

I'm in the arts too, and I completely agree with her.

You don't have to hate art to realize that it is neither necessary or earth-shattering. It's a good pastime, it's nice for escapism (which, I think, you are glorifying into something greater than it is in reality), but at the end of the day, the cleaning lady at your local theater is much more useful with her mop than you are with your skull of Yorick.

reply

A pastime? What exactly do you do in the arts? Like I already mentioned, it may not be solving world peace, but it serves its purpose. Whatever purpose that may be, is entirely up to it's recipient.

Your entitled to your own opinion. If your more affected by a freshly mopped floor, than one of the most beautiful speeches ever written, good for you! I guess we just find different things mentally stimulating...Wondering if you actually know the speech...

I don't think you're understanding me. I enjoy art, and I enjoy being an artist above everything else, because that is what fulfills me personally, but it is by no means a useful profession - which is why I have a day job. I respect and value art and its impact on the psyche as much as you do, but, unlike you, I can grasp that there are more important things in the world.

I suppose it's alright for you to be angry: Thirlby denigrates the very fame and recognition you so clearly desire. However, just asking yourself why being a celebrity is more precious to you than being an artist would be a much more fruitful enterprise than this thread.

reply

Maybe it's not a useful profession for you. Sorry about that. It is for me. We basically disagree about the importance that art plays in our society, and in our world. If you bothered to read some of the older threads in this post, you'd see that I've made that abundantly clear. I feel it is important, and it's affect on myself and the world we live in is very relevant. I feel it is important, you don't. Difference of opinion.

As for your insight that celebrity is more important for me than art, I was wondering where you got that from? That's never been an issue with me (nor is it in any other post on this thread). If your sensing that, maybe it's coming from somewhere else (maybe within yourself?) "...thou dost protest too much."

I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.
