The Actor's Studio with Jessica Chastain

She claimed she had never done nudity until now. Then what does she call her nakedness in her first film Jolene. This film put her on the radar in Hollywood. It was a great low budget film with a stand out cast and performance by her. Why was this not even mentioned? The director Dan Ireland ,who died a few months back was also responsible for kick starting Renée Zellweger career as well. It was another low budget , The Whole Wide World, another gem of a film. Both Jessica and Renée attended the memorial service for Mr. Ireland. Renée spoke of Dan With such kindness and love for this wonderful man who just happened to be my best friend. Miss you loads. RIP

Wasn't she talking about the stage production of Salome that she did in LA with Al Pacino, which she did in 2006, a year or two before she made Jolene?

reply

Salome the film was 2008,I think. Jolene was 2011. Which was her first film. She had done some TV work before but not a film let alone the lead.I just looked at her bio which is the longest I've ever seen on IMDB considering how new on the scene she is. Every film she ever did was included there. She may have just lost a fan. I also thought she was too full of herself on Actors Studio, with all the H i s t o r y she studies. Hey Jessie, acting ain't brain surgery.

According to the IMDB, Jolene was released in 2008. According to the wikipedia page dedicated to her theater, television, and film roles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Chastain_on_screen_and_stage#Stage, she did Salome on stage with Pacino in 2006, with the film following some years later. So, her nudity in Salome on stage came first, which is what she said, if I recall.

As for the nature of acting, acting is embodied intelligence, and doing it well is an intellectually demanding task. If that's difficult to understand, compare Jessica against actors who don't take the craft seriously and who don't do their homework when they take a role and then see who's the better artist.

For your information Jolene was filmed long before it's release. Not sure of the actual date but i will ask the costume designer .Also I think she mentioned that she had never been nude on FILM. Sorry but I'm still pissed at her for not mentioning Jolene . That interview could not have been too long after Dan's premature death. I'm almost certain Dan would not have been hurt by her omitting him , but I am. He never got the credit in his short life that he deserved.

She was nude in Salome.

FWIW, it's possible that Jessica did indeed mention Dan Ireland but due to the editing, which I found choppy and noticeable at a few points during the broadcast, her mention of him was cut. Who knows?

reply

Yes, that interview was terribly edited. They probably did talk about Jolene, they probably talked a lot about a lot of things, but much of it was edited away (those talks can go on for hours). I knew Dan Ireland too, peripherally, and it's a terrible shame to lose him. But to come on here and attack Ms Chastain for not mentioning Jolene or Dan is misplaced grief, I think. Blame the editors at Bravo. (And who cares when she was first nude, for crying out loud?!) For the record, she didn't talk about her late sister either, who committed suicide. Maybe James Lipton didn't want to ask her about loved ones who have died. Who knows. Chastain doesn't control these interviews.

reply

The whole interview unedited was 5 hours.
