Wanting to see more serious work from Mr. Pine, then watch People Like Us in which he is excellent. It is a heartbreakingly beautiful film that includes Elizabeth Banks as a half-sister he did not know he had and Michelle Pfeiffer as his mother. Chris and Michelle are amazing together in their scenes.
After that, watch Into The Woods in which he almost steals the show as Cinderella's Prince. Chris's singing is unexpectedly good and he plays - to quote him in interviews - "the most fully realized two-dimensional person in the film".
He is a very talented singer and was selected to record a couple songs with Barbra Streisand for her latest album that was released a couple months ago. He said that she first called him, he was afraid that she wanted him to sing with her on the entire recording; when it became clear to him that she only meant two songs, he was giddy with relief and said "yes".
Chris seems to be thoughtful, intelligent, well-read, and certainly no ones fool. He can be very droll during interviews. It has been fascinating to watch him handle TV hosts who treat him in a shallow, disrespectful manner by pointedly looking at them as if they had embarrassed themselves, them waiting with non-mocking dignity for the next subject. Each time I have seen this, he appears very credible and they look stupid, yet he has done nothing overt except to not credit their stupid remarks. He is far more polished than they will ever be.
One thing that Chris appears to understand is that his work is the proof of his talent and skills. He certainly isn't afraid to try different genres to test himself. Good for him!.
