About the FTN campaign

Caitlin's support of the Free The N!pple campaign is admirable but wrongheaded. FTN simply plays into patriarchy's idea of freedom rather than women's idea of freedom and expression. There is no difference between Caitlin or Scout Willis showing their bewbs under the pretext of freedom and countless websites like Chive publishing endless bewbs.

In fact Caitlin is doing exactly what the patriarchal p0rn discourse wants her to do - expose herself not by coercion but of her own volition. Not only that, Caitlin is dragging along with her (and possibly damaging) other young women under the misconception that they are engaging in acts of freedom of expression.

One other point I would make is that there is an element of exhibitionism and vanity in this campaign because it seems that the only women parading their bewbs on Instagram etc are those who are well endowed, according to the dominant male gaze. I don't see any 65 year old Russian women exposing themselves, only young women with near perfect breasts.

If Caitlin's rachmaninoff was not first class I believe she would not be so eager to expose it.

Agreed.

I also agree. Very well said!

But as for everything else Caitlin is doing on twitter, I am in complete agreement. She is a very switched on young woman.

I understand where you are coming from but don't agree at all. Your standpoint seems to imply that women should not be free to go topless like their male counterparts because it 'plays into what the patriarchal p0rn discourse wants her to do'. So in other words, we are being held bondage by our fears of being objectified? That does not seem like a better option to me.

I am in complete support of Caitlyn's stance on the matter. Yes, right now, FTN is controversial and is likely to attract both feminists and lewd perverts in droves alike. And I am sure the women who participate are fully aware. However, with time comes desensitization and I believe it is the hope of the women who support FTN that in the future, a topless woman will provoke the same response as a topless man.

In the 1930s, it was still illegal for men to be topless in New York, and it took over a decade before the idea even started to seem decent to the public who considered it lewd. Now, no one cares if a man doesn't have a shirt on. If women keep acting like they need to bow down to a patriarchal society that has sexualized their toplessness and labelled it indecent, then we are never going to get anywhere. The men did it and now we are desensitized to bare chested men. Women need to do the same even if it is currently a challenging environment and provokes controversy.
