"I'm Not In Love" (1975)

If you could boil down the entire decade of the 1970s into one song, this would be the one. It perfectly captures the essence of long summer days under immense skies, whilst also taking into account the shadowy undercurrents of myth and wonder that lie beneath the façade of modern society.

Which of course has nothing to do with what the song is really about: a man telling a woman she's no big deal while his words reveal he's actually madly in love with her. In other words, he's lying through his teeth, trying to convince himself he's not in love.

It's a great song, but hardly the one and only song that defines the decade. It's one of many.

I don't think music should be tied to an era from whence it came. This song still holds up today and can fit any decade and for any listener.

reply

I think you are correct. This song is one of the only songs that defines the 70's for me too.

1975 was such a great year for pop music. Songs that were so 'out of the box' and original. Before the disco assembly line took hold.
...I'm Not in Love, Convoy, Love Will Keep Us Together, Miracles, Evil Woman, Rhinestone Cowboy, December 1963, 50 Ways to Leave your Lover, Sister Golden Hair...

I have to confess that when the song came out, during the middle section where the woman's voice speaks, I was convinced for years that she was saying "Be poised and quiet".

No Internet back then, the only way to check lyrics was to buy sheet music...
