Jordan Peele Says He’s Not Going To Use White Males As His Leads: “I’ve Seen That Movie”

Tyler Perry's been doing "black leads" for 13 years. They all make money, and the audience is mostly black. I bet Peele's is mostly white liberals.

Speaking at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre (via THR), Peele talked about “Us,” as well as what the success he’s found has afforded him. Basically, he has already made waves doing his own thing, so that’s exactly what he’s going to keep on doing.

“The way I look at it, I get to cast black people in my movies,” the director said. “I feel fortunate to be in this position where I can say to Universal, ‘I want to make a $20 million horror movie with a black family.’ And they say yes.”

But don’t go expecting Peele to go off to make the next major blockbuster film with a studio-approved white male lead. No, the filmmaker has other ideas in mind.

“I don’t see myself casting a white dude as the lead in my movie. Not that I don’t like white dudes,” he said. “But I’ve seen that movie.”

He continued, “It really is one of the best, greatest pieces of this story, is feeling like we are in this time — a renaissance has happened and proved the myths about representation in the industry are false.”

This just in...Spielberg said he is not going to use black people as his leads.

What would people say to that? How would they respond? Everyone knows the answer to that. Armageddon would begin, riots would ensue, etc.

I know why Peele said what he said, and I know what he meant about representation, and he's not wrong about the ratio of white to black male leads, but damn, the hypocrisy of this statement is just mind boggling to me, how one race can say this statement and nobody cares, and another race could say it and cause the end of civilization. Just say it a different way man. Damn.

I find it all pretty funny. But statements like this are why racism will be around until human beings die off. People can't make one statement about race without taking a jab at another race. It's hilarious. The lesson, boys and girls, is that racism will unfortunately always exist, people will always use it, and people will always exploit it.

We're not as smart as we think we are.

Amen! He's a racist, and I'm done with him and his silly films.

I don't want to have trees show up in my films. I've seen that movie. 😉

Funny.

I don't want racists like PC showing up in my films, or anywhere else for that matter. I've seen that movie.

If DC were smart (hehe) they'd hire him to reboot Green Lantern but with John Stewart instead of Hal Jordan then.

Peele is racist

reply

Yes he is.

Yeah, well Woody Allen just makes films about New Yorkers, Martin Scorcese just makes films about Italian-Americans, Clint Eastwood just makes films about old white men, and if Peele wants to make films about a specific section of society he's not the only filmmaker who is.

Some filmmakers just want to tell the stories about what they know best.

100% this. I'm sure he finds it easiest to write stories revolving around black leads and I get that. Things change and perhaps he will someday write a story where he feels a white lead would work best but honestly I'm enjoying his work so much I'm fine just trusting his judgment and looking forward to whatever he does next.

I know I'll get crucified for saying this, as LauraGrace did to me on another thread, but that's not strictly true.

For example, Woody Allen made Match Point, Martin Scorsese made Silence, and Clint Eastwood made Letters from Iwo Jima.

I'm not arguing with your overall point, or joining in the stupid attacks on Peele, but let's not throw Allen, Scorsese and Eastwood under the bus in the process (or if we're going to do so, can we at least be accurate?)

reply

I'm not "throwing them under the bus", just pointing out that some directors do have a rather focused point of view. Hitchcock made suspense films, Sophia Coppola makes films about rich girls, John Waters makes films about low-lifes, Tim Burton makes twee fantasies, because that's what they're interested in, those are the stories they want to tell. If Peele wants to be such a director instead of going mainstream and using Leonardo DiCaprio to get his films, then fine.

And yes, most of the directors above have made a few films that aren't completely on-trend, Scorcese made "The Age of Innocence" about WASPs, and Hitchcock made a weak sex farce called "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". But that doesn't mean that the bulk of their work isn't limited to stories about certain types of people.

reply

Indeed, and I'm sure the bulk of Peele's work will be about black folk.

Imagine a white director saying he/she would never use a black person as the lead in his/her films. There would be outrage.

Yep. The cities would burn.

"sucks to be a white dude these days. u cant be racist to anyone anymore except white dudes."

I misread that as saying only white dudes can be racist to white dudes.

Oh, and, word on the street is that (quote) "black people can't be racist at all"...

reply

I guess that why he wont be doing the Disney Gargoyles movie. The Gargoyles aren't black enough for him.
