Does anyone else not consider them metal?

I get a more hard rock vibe from them.

reply

Between song writing, arrangements and structure over 40 years they are probably in the top 5 musicians of all time.
Seen them live over 20 times. See them live if you doubt what I say

reply

Do you consider them metal though?

reply

They are the thinking man’s heavy metal

reply

Yes

reply

They've certainly experimented a bit over the decades, but at their core, they are definately metal.

reply

I get it, but it just lack heaviness to me to be considered metal.

reply

It is metal but I'd say with some progressive flavor.

reply

They were definitive heavy metal in the seventies and eighties. If that's not the case anymore, it's because the definition of metal has changed since then.

reply

I love Black Sabbath, but that's another band that never really felt metal to me. However, I do find them heavier than Iron Maiden.

reply

Black Sabbath is usually credited as the first heavy metal band. And I see what you're saying, it's not the heavy metal of Metallica and Rammstein. Heavy metal evolved.

reply

Yeah, 80s metal feels so tame that it feels like hard rock.

reply

Except for the underground stuff.

reply

They sound like Marillion when you compare them to bands that are actually heavy.

reply

Marillion is about as heavy as a feather.

reply

He did not suggest Marillion were heavy.
Quite the opposite in fact.

reply

I was agreeing with him. I was just mocking their softness.

reply

I do and consider them the best metal band of all time. Hell, people have called Bon Jovi metal of some type, so Maiden definitely qualifies.

reply

Bon Jovi metal? Who are these people so I can throw a pie in their face?

reply

Pretty odd to come in decades later and tell the people that originally used these terms to describe music that they were doing it wrong.

reply

^ haha so true

reply

Def Leppard was once called heavy metal by the mainstream media, but most metalheads wouldn't.

reply

Early Def Leppard could be considered metal, but yeah by the time Hysteria rolled around any aspect of them that was ever metal was long gone.

reply

I would say On Through the Night was the closest they ever came to "Metal", but once you got to High 'n' Dry, they became more hard rock.

reply

Their breakout albums “Slippery When Wet” and “New Jersey” we’re both marketed and labeled as Hair Metal when they were released in the 80s. Their later albums were marketed differently, starting with Keep The Faith, as a hard rock albums.

reply

I think that was just their attempt to avoid the fact that hair metal sucks.

reply

I still see them as heavy metal but I could see how a fan of deathcore or thrash metal would not consider Iron Maiden to be metal. A friend convinced me that hair metal bands of the eighties are actually hard rock bands. Iron Maiden also made changes to their music over the years as they experienced lineup changes. A couple of the links below have different categories of METAL.

Iron Maiden is one of those bands that walk the line of metal and hard rock. They definitely fall in the category of NWOBHM, but I don't find most of those bands metal. I think it's an 80s thing.

reply

Ratt were a hair metal band whose debut EP was closer to being heavy metal than a band like Poison or Warrant.

reply

Ratt's sound changed when Robbin Crosby started to struggle with drugs. Robbin Crosby came up with a lot of fast metal riffs while DeMartini was more of a blues rock guitarist. I liked Ratt during the 80's since they had more hard rock songs instead of the sappy ballads of Poison and Warrant. Poison and Warrant also had plenty of rockers but they had more sappy ballads.

reply

Iron maiden practically invented metal you philistine!

Where do you draw the line for qualifying for "Metal" ?

reply

Iron Maiden just doesn't feel heavy enough to be metal to me. There might be certain elements of metal though. AC/DC feels heavier, but they're a hard rock band.

reply

Judas Priest were metal before Iron Maiden began, and most people would say Black Sabbath invented metal.

reply

yeah , all true .

I didnt mean single handed .
Maiden and their contempories dun it .

reply

Eh Black Sabbath and Judas Priest were really the ones who invented metal.

reply

Iron Butterfly
