Travis Fimmel – a neato actor !

Neither heard of Travis Fimmel nor saw his photos before the „Vikings“ resurged in March this year.
Born and raised in northern Germany i was always interested in nordic history and mythology.
Then the whisper went around that an underwear-model was supposed to play the lead character in a historical serie about nordic men.
„Ohhhhh, Nein!!!"

After the first Vikings-episodes were aired i gave it a try - curiosity strangles the cat - and was intrigued from the very first minute.
Great!!!
Little inaccuracies dont bother cause many details of that time are unknown and leaving much space for phantasy.
It´s more important that the story is well told and it definitely is!
In wonderful pictures with credibly actors.
And most important: Travis Fimmel has a new loyal fan now!

For sure his fan community will increase, especially when the Vikings are coming to Germany in two weeks. My brother is loving the serie also and had problems to get his three sons away from the screen.
Fortunately this time the Vikings are coming up on a „Video-on-Demand-Channel" and not on a longship.
Unfortunately it is not shown on public TV cause many here are still only watching public service broadcaster what is expensive enough (everybody has to pay even if you dont have a TV set).

The recent weeks i read and watched much about his work before the „Vikings“ and dont understand at all why there is so few information about him and his actor-actions.
Shy?
Bad promotion?
Hidden or open foes?
Conspiracy?
(the last was a joke, though some particulars made me think about it)

Tarzan (2003) was a nice show and cancelled after a few episodes for reasons i do not understand. The auditorium was big enough, but ok, i dont know the internal calculations and accounting.

In „The Beast" (2009) he did a very good job, got mainly good critiques and to some of the bad ones:
He was supposed to be an unexperienced young cop.
So what is wrong about it, that he appeared young and unexperienced?
Convinced me even more that he is a very good actor who can slip into many roles.

In the horror movie „Needles" (2010) he is the older brother and a crime scene photographer.
Me and my neph enjoyed that unusual australian film very much. I liked the most that there was no woman screaming the whole time around „Is it you, Billy?!" and needed to be saved by a man.
Mr. Fimmel was my prime suspect -wonderful cruel look sometimes- but dont want to spoiler here.

„Harodim" (2012) is an interesting movie of an unconventional thinker and the three main characters are nicely played. Easy rider Peter Fonda as the father of Travis Fimmel has something.
And Mr. Fimmel as the arrogant ex-officer who becomes more and more humble was very impressing.

For me the best redneck in „The Baytown Outlaws" (2012) is an Australian (Travis Fimmel).
Funny absurd movie!
Probably a german cannot know how a real redneck has to be. Then again some guys in the Southern States appeared very similar to me, though barely understood what they were saying.

The nordic English was easy to understand for that very reason i liked the Viking´s accent.
Mr. Fimmels voice is basicly smooth but as „Ragnar" he can be loud and provoking too.
He knows how to use his voice!
Ragnar´s troop feasting with the King of Northumbria is one of my favourite scenes.
And be careful, Ladies! Possibly he is a wolf in a sheep´s fur.
Mostly i liked the different expressions on his face and how it changed in the situations.
People who are not able to see the differences in the various smirks are explaining to me why so many guys suddenly get their noses cracked out of the blue.
You know, even in northern germany a smile is not always friendly meant.
As a Northman (Norseman sounds for me like a horse with a big nose) so, as a Northman you have mildly facial expressions except you just want to scare somebody to death, in a combat for example. Nowadays sometimes still used in verbal battles.
There is little room for big gestures like e.g. best known from italian opera singers.
Not to blame italian opera singers but can you imagine Ragnar kneeling down and belting out to Lagertha „O sole mio!"?

By the travel through the times it was well to see how Mr. Fimmel grew up and improved his acting talent. It´s a matter of taste if he was looking better as a boy-beauty or as a grown up man. Personally i prefer a grown up man and now he certainly is a man.
Why he is suspected to look like many other blonde (green-) blueeyed men i dont understand either.
Yes, beside his shining eyes he has a mouth and two ears and the nose is in the middle of his face.
With this frame he is a dead ringer for all caucasian men?!
What a pity that i did not see a doppelgänger of him on german streets.
Would have invited him to a stylish honey wine.

Independant if he appears on screen or on the street:
Travis Fimmel is an appearance!
Can hardly wait for the second season of Vikings and hopefully Ragnar will not raid Paris too soon. His appearance is finished short after the Paris raid (according to legends his life ends the same year in the Northumbrian snake´s pit ).
„See Naples and die!"
Ok, ok, that´s a different chapter.

In the meantime will try to figure out, from where it´s possible to order „Southern Comfort" (2006) and „Ivory" (2010). The too sweet liqueur you can get in every supermarket, alas not the movies.

Until then:
Cordial thanks to Travis Fimmel for the forceful Northman „Ragnar" who is often caught between Hel and the deep blue sea!

That is so wrong to have to pay for tv even if you don't have it. In Sweden they force people with computers to pay for tv because you can access TV channels. Hey you pay for the wifi and most of the streaming channel's.
I watch Vikings on HBOnordic.com for now season one is down but as soon the second season starts they put it up again and it's possible to watch the day after history channel.
Do you have that kind of service in Germany?
I work with media so I can access with vpn Usa Uk Australia Germany France Canada and Japan
Can you tip me of some good streaming sites in Germany?

reply

My apologies for the late answer, Kimberly!
Why I wasn't informed about your reply by mail don't understand.
(maybe changed the mail-address in the meantime...Hmmm...probably not)

First to your question about good german streaming sites:
Would recommend a search via Google cause don't know any legal costless german streaming sites.
Costless download is not tolerated in DE except some old dusty tomes.
Private streaming is still allowed if you really only stream...Hmmm...nearly allowed.
Grey zone and court quarrels if streaming is similar to downloading (last court decision: It's not).
Switzerland is more open-minded. You know, these sites with a ".ch" at the end.
V....... watchseries .ch
The search function on the Switzerland site helps and Ta-dah...a series-universe opens to you.
Switzerland is much better in foreign languages (mostly english versions there).
Well, doesn't hurt to improve my English.

From here on you may not read any further (too long and off topic).
Pardon me, Mr. Fimmel!

Yes, also in my view it's wrong how we are forced to pay...robber knights!
When I thought about the whole topic got in a rage again.
Very much motivated to go to court like many others here.
Objected all notifications of charges as a first step.
How the charges are organized makes it even worse.

Each household has to pay a blanket amount of EUR 17.98 monthly, independent how much people live in it and if there is radio/TV or not (soon we will have households with 100 members and more).
The rules changed beginning of this year.
Till last year paid for my radio rounded EUR 6.00 and now 3 times the amount.
For TV- and radio-owners nothing changed; for both together it was last year the same EUR 17.98 like this year.
How you access the limited offers of the public service broadcaster is your own decision (cable network, Internet, satellite, antenna) and has to be paid extra...of course.

Our government explains the package-payment for radio, computer and TV with the expensive authors- and copyrights, production costs and the duty to provide the folk with reliable news.
True, with the package you pay also for artists and daily news. But neither willed to pay for the strange Schlager-music-shows (most expensive productions of the public broadcaster) nor want to see costly "Wetten dass...?" = "You bet?" what changed over the years into "Who risks a bet and breaks his neck?"
No problem if people want to watch it, but please pay it yourself or enjoy more potato chips ads!

We have some private channels for free, financing themselves by commercial; they don't participate from the big pot. Public broadcasters submit commercial too but "not so much".

And we have Pay-TV...if you like...also online available, yeah!
One is popular cause it made the auction-race for broadcasting the Bundesliga “Football Federal League” (isn't it soccer?...however).
Our public service was'nt able to pay so much...probably they just planned the next Schlager-music-show or needed to raise the salary of the zillion intendants.
Pay-TV for the Bundesliga costs actually EUR 29.90 monthly (after 2 years EUR 46.90).
Better don't discuss it...could cause bloody german battles since not everybody is a soccer fan...and not everybody likes Schlager-music.
But we have to see the advantages for the pub owners!
With a monthly investment of EUR 29.90 and an extra fee to the GEMA they can fill their pubs!
Yes, TV in public costs extra...for a moderate sized screen the GEMA starts with monthly EUR 50.09 (don't know what weirdo calculated the 9 cents).

The GEMA is the society for music utilization and is allowed to collect money for using the rights of their members (composers, songwriters, publishers).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gesellschaft_f%C3%BCr_musikalische_Auff%C 3%BChrungs-_und_mechanische_Vervielf%C3%A4ltigungsrechte
As an artist you don't have to be a GEMA-member; but without the GEMA it's difficult to earn money here. What was basically a good idea turned into a monopole with very dubious rules.

For TV and radio in restaurants, clubs, pubs and hotels and for every public use of music you have to pay to the GEMA. Even for public viewing of soccer the GEMA gets money cause during the broadcast may be played some music.
The GEMA gets money also with every purchase of computers, printers, USB-sticks, CD, DVD, cell phone, copier etc.
Know that for a longer and now wanted to know how much it is exactly.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauschalabgabe#Aktuelle_S.C3.A4tze_in_Deu tschland
Aha, with the purchase of a slow copier it's EUR 25,00 and a faster one EUR 87,50 for the GEMA.
This because you may copy a book with your machine...don't know anybody who copies books with a copy machine...but it's possible!...or perhaps some music scores....somewhere...sometimes.
Mobile phone with touchscreen EUR 36.00, computer EUR 13,65 sounds cheap but hard drive EUR 5.00 - 34.00 and DVD-burner EUR 10.68 add up.
Rather don't think about further duties ... e.g. sales tax 19%....

Nobody looks through with what key the GEMA distributes the collected money to their members (members only!). That caused some harmless riots by less famous artists and was easily solved; they can apply for social welfare.

A side effect of the odd german treatment of rights blocks Youtube-Videos.
"Our" GEMA didn't entitle some music-rights. These videos are blocked for germany.
http://www.basicthinking.de/blog/wp-content/uploads/YouTubeGema.jpg
(every german knows THAT mf picture)
Ok, ok.... it's not only the GEMA who's responsible for the constant quarrel over the copy- and music rights and ACTA wasn't a reasonable solution either!!!
If it continues this way we will become the valley of silence and darkness...or the country of criminals.
No, not me....No! Never heard of the Youtube unblocker!

Amazon prime is a good alternative if you want to remain clean by watching movies and series the public broadcaster will show in the next century...(well, that was a bit overstated).
Amazon expanded their offers very much for proper prices...though they could become a little faster with their releases also. Yet, don't have a clue how long they need to negotiate about copyrights.
This oldish woman here is anyhow more used to order a DVD...as long as she is not on a virtual trip to Switzerland...the new land of the free.

Finally one of my favourite jokes what circled around 2004 after the bad hurricane season in Florida. Maybe was only reminded to it cause we just had a bad storm, a "stormy" compared to Floridas' hurricanes.
Anyhow, this joke fits to hurricane-shaken states AND exaggerated fees.

Currently Netflix is not available in Germany.
Probably we'll get it later this year.

But thank you for the hint!
Reminds me to rate the both movies.
Sometimes forget to do so after watching.

And yessssssss...Travis Fimmel is one of the best!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!
Reading this made my day...my weekend, my year!
Travis Fimmel will play Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky in All Quiet on the Western Front (2016).

A very sad but fantastic book by Erich Maria Remarque.
With Travis as Kat it'll become a great movie also. 
