To whoever that hate this kid....

What's wrong with you people? You don't like young people becoming actors. Does that mean Christian Bale shouldn't be an actor since 28 years ago?! Only a craphead like some of you guys would hate this Ellar kid. I really praise this kid a lot. He should be a sucessful actor like Bale someday or maybe he would get his own Walk of Fame star!

Christian Bale had talent from the get-go. A real natural. This kid couldn't act if his life depended on it.

I think young actors are great! I do have to say though, in my opinion Coltrane is just ok. Christian Bale was very obviously a stellar actor right off the bat. Empire of the Sun he was 13 so a little older than Coltrane when he started, but a far shot better. Now that being said, the scripts are totally different and Coltrane didn't have a script that called for showing a wide range of emotions. I don't believe he will go on to be as successful or impressive as Christian Bale, but you never know; he seems a heck of a lot nicer of a person than Bale. I do wish him all the success in the world, i really did enjoy his very realistic performance in this film.

Bale was 5 or 6 years older when he did Empire of the Sun.

I don’t know if Ellar is a great actor or not. But he was great in Boyhood. He fit. I really like Ethan Hawke as an actor and Patricia Arquette....the sorta more professional actors in the movie are the ones who sorta stuck out like sore thumbs.

He was 12, but small for his age obviously.

The actor was 12 years old when he was cast. Amy Irving, Bale's co-star in the television movie Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna, recommended Bale to her then-husband, Steven Spielberg, for the role. More than 4,000 child actors auditioned.

So you wanted the director to kick him off the set as he grew older when he became a bad actor?

Yes, he was a much better child actor. But the movie was about him ageing. I would NOT blame the kid.

I have nothing against young actors, that would be ridiculous. I do tend do dislike actors who deliver performances that I find to be subpar. That's the category I'd put Ellar Coltrane in, nothing against him personally, but I thought his performance in Boyhood was just plain abysmal. He was actually pretty good as a kid, early in the movie, but once puberty came and went i couldn't believe how terrible his performance became. Absolutely ruined the film for me.

He wasn’t that bad. He seems very shy, and his acting was a bit sedated. I think he should have been doing plays at least while this movie wasn’t filming so he could have become more alive and less monotone in the film. Most of the kids in this movie were better than him most likely because they were real actors. He should get training and he will be fine.

I think you're way off with that assessment. 'Boyhood' thrives off realism/naturalism. Ellar Coltraine's performance over the years showed us a quiet, sometimes awkward child/teen. To me, this is very realistic.

That's the way kids are today. They sometimes mumble their words and aren't always comfortable speaking to adults. During puberty they go into 'awkward' phases.

Linlklater could have brought in a more experienced or polished child actor and Boyhood would have been like every other Hollywood mainstream film. That's not what he was after.

I believe Coltraine's performance was brilliant.

Ditto everything I said for Loralai Linklater as well.
