Trying to found it out if its just a character on OITNB. Wiki is saying she but there is a Time cover about trangender with her so I don't know.

In fact I don't see anywhere in her bio that she was born male

It's not written 'Was born male' but if you read the 'Trivia' part, in the last 2 paragraphs, it become very clear that she was. It says :
1. Her third grade teacher warned her mother that Cox was sick and "would end up in New Orleans wearing a dress if we don't get HIM into therapy right away."
2. This makes Cox the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of Time in the magazine's entire history.
And will always be a male. No amount of surgery nor estrogen injections will change that.

all babies appear as the same gender for the first six weeks of their lives. we are really not that different. we just have different anatomy.
nature is not the strongest determining factor about gender. if it was, then people would not have gender identity issues.
there are people who have the Y chromosome, but because their bodies are insensitive to testosterone, they appear female at birth.
fact: there were twin boys who were born back in the 50's who went in to be circumcised. one twin was mutilated during the process and was operated on to look female. the parents raised him as if he was biologically female and he never knew that he had started out male....
anatomy is just the tip of the iceberg. there is way more to it than that.
If we are thinking of the same story, yes the man did find out after years of feeling like he was meant to be a boy and eventually went into the woods and ended his life with a shotgun.
