There are pictures of Elle smoking at parties and I've heard from people that Dakota has also smoked at parties. And also considering the fact that Elle and Dakota's friends seem to smoke regularly, so its likely that Elle and Dakota are "social smokers" off screen.

All of this. They each have definitely tried smoking once in their life just socially. They also are from a generation and city and career path where many smoke weed so I know they've tried that too. They've also both been pretending to smoke on screen since a young age so they at least would be good at it by now. None of this is a big deal and they are acting. Get over it.
