Has there been a death in the sports world as impactful as Kobe’s

Where literally everyone from basketball, to baseball, to soccer, to even wrestling are tweeting about this?

reply

Lou Gehrig, dead at 37

Here's a few more

Muhammad Ali isn't on the list. Rush job possibly or RACIST. LoL

reply

Muhammad Ali? He was old and had been ill with Parkinson's for years.

reply

Yeah. We all saw that coming.

reply

He was actually 74, i'd consider more like 80+ to be "old"

reply

72 is considered old

reply

Dude you're "old" once you hit 50.

reply

He was not even remotely old, LOL.

reply

not remotely? come on now.. The man was in his 70's for crying out loud. Sure people are capable of living through their full 70s, but it's still old.

reply

I can remember after Joan Rivers died David Letterman said that 81 is not that old anymore.

reply

I like Dave but his opinion isn't fact.

reply

I dunno about racist but possibly sexist. I mean, c'mon--what is Flo-Jo? Chopped liver? She famously died in her sleep years ago in her early 40s. She was a freaking Olympics champion, for Chrissakes.

reply

Great call. I remember her death now. When a world class athlete dies at that age it is a shock.

reply

Who knows? Twitter has only been around less than 15 years.

reply

No. But that's because social media has presented a unique platform unavailable to previous generations. Not just for the mourning, but for the ability of Kobe's life and message to reach so many in the first place.

reply

If there had been social media back then, I'm sure Clemente or even Munson would've inspired a similar response.

reply

Dale Earnhardt. No magical "social media" necessary.

reply

I agree with this...and Lou Gehrig.

reply

Lou Gehrig, like TimMC said. Top player cut down by a fatal disease. Died even younger than Koby. A lot of people still call it Gehrig's disease in this country.

Roberto Clemente was pretty tragic. He was still playing, though getting near the end of his career. Hall of Fame career. Died while doing a humanitarian flight to bring aid to his home country after it was hit by an earthquake. Government officials kept stealing the stuff from previous flights, which is why he was flying with the latest shipment. He wanted to make sure it got to the people.

reply

Have you ever thought of what a coincidence it was that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig's disease?

reply

*badump bump* *rimshot*

reply

Got that one from a Sopranos episode.

reply

Roberto Clemente.

Edit-Jacob beat me to it!

reply

Dont think so.
