Owned a flat in London when he was a struggling actor?

I read that he still lives in the same modest flat in London, that he's owned since his late 20s, when he was struggling to get enough work to make ends meet. This was reported several times by the media and he confirmed it in at least one interview. The surprising aspect is supposed to be that he still lives there. What I find surprising is that a struggling actor in his late 20s somehow became an owner of a flat in a city where the prices of real estate are reportedly immensely high but the articles I read provide no explanation. Can anyone satiate my curiosity?

Maybe he was left some money off a relative who had passed on

Struggling actor doesn't automatically equal struggling for money. Alot of these actors are more well-off than they let on; they will especially play off a prosperous background if it doesn't suit their image.

No point in buying a large home if you're spending most days of the year outside of the country. Michael is a single man who enjoys his freedom and has yet to settle down. There's no "home nest" for him to attend to. If he really wanted to upgrade his pad, he would've moved already. He seems happy to stay where he is though.

I would imagine that there are parts of London that were/are less expensive than other areas. House prices have increased significantly within the time he bought the flat to present day so it's not fair to compare. Did he buy the flat or rent it at first?

It's a 3 room flat in what was yet to be an up and coming east London neighbourhood (Hackney). And I believe I read he bought it when he was starting to get regular tv gigs like HEX, which was a series he was on for two seasons in 2004/5. That would have been a pretty steady paycheque and probably more $$ than he'd been making with commercials and guest staring roles.

True but he reportedly struggled to get enough work to make ends meet.

A person struggling to get enough work to make ends meet would find it difficult if not impossible to buy a flat in any era.

If you read the previous post by acr65, a steady paycheque from a steady line of work would explain why he was able to buy a flat. He wasn't struggling as much when he got that role in the HEX series.

Struggling to make ends meet doesn't mean you can't accomplish things. It may take longer to achieve a goal, it may require a lot of sacrifice and ingenuity, you'd definitely need to hustle and work hard...but it's not always impossible.

Fassbender might be modest but I guess his financial means were not as modest as the media would have us believe.
Btw, by appearing in a TV commercial my friend who is a part-time model made more money in one afternoon than most people with well-paying jobs earn in a month. :)
