absolutely selling his soul

Hi there,
In New Zealand, Rhys Darby is really really really milking his success with advertising and appearances for different causes. Even the average kiwi who loved his character in flight of the conchords is sick of seeing him on television. He has just appeared in an advertising campaign for , of all things, a mobile phone company - 2 degrees- I swear, you wouldnt believe how many different sequences he has filmed for this campaign- and there are other ridiculous ads for varying causes as well- It just makes me sad- 0verexposure hurts me!

all the best

Cheer up buddy, those 2 degrees ads are hilarious and IMO just add to his hilarity as an individual and as a performer. In regards to your comment about milking his success, the only other thing i can think of him being in is the ad where he is promoting a charity, which in my opinion is not selling out. If a celebrity endorsing a charity is "selling out" then there are hundreds of celebrities out there trying to help good causes who could be deemed to be "selling out" by your definition which i whole heartedly disagree with.

I agree, those ads are fantastic, and although he plays a more minor character in FOTC he's actually been a bigger star stand up comedian in NZ than FOTC have been for longer, and with more success (Billy T noms etc). He's peaking now with Yes Man etc aswell, and accepting a couple of offers to do promotional stuff in his home country. I don't see anything wrong with the picture at all.

I'm pretty sure I'm an 'average kiwi' (if you can define that) and I'm certainly not sick of seeing him. I agree with shane_butts_ and tabithaknightis, supporting a charity is hardly selling out, and those 2degrees ads are good and comical. I honestly don't think he's exactly been overesposed. To be honest, we hardly used to see him much, and I'm actually really enjoying seeing him out there more.

Besides, a comedian's got to work for a living too. ;)

yeah I know he is still funny. Im just still not used to people selling out with huge ad campaigns. I know its normal now but it still makes them look whorey. If I could make my living through comedy or music or acting, I would just make enough to live modestly..and I wouldnt sell any products with my face..Telecommunications? not really a passionate cause....he's funny , but gone down in my opinion..*beep* him.....ha!

Don't know if you've seen this interview, but they start it right off by talking about his overexposure and 2 Degrees:

He's in the business to make money. Make your money Rhys. *beep* all the nay sayers.

So because hes making money, and becoming more popular, hes a sell out?

Do you know what a sell out is ?

A sell out, is someone who compromises their integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money, success or personal gain.

Seen as you arn't Rhys, you can't really say that hes a sell out, because you have no idea what principles he has. He hasnt sold out, he is becoming more popular and therefore getting more offers.

If he was to payed to tell the world that comedy is the most evil thing on the planet, for money, that would be selling out. This, well its just making money in the business.
