The technique these people use is to talk about a subject that is impossible to prove and that you can't do anything immediately about. So, you can keep guilting people, creating arguments, and say there are solutions, when there aren't and so people keep everyone running while seeming like a passionate champion/doomsayer.
Guns, are a concrete reality, we know what they are, what they do, and where they are at. However, in the US you will never make guns illegal because you can't change the constitution without creating a dangerous situation. So, there is nothing you can do about guns in the US. So, you can't endlessly talk about a law, which is another concrete thing, because you will get denied, explained at, and so forth. So, you can't endlessly talk about guns and succeed.
So, you are right.

I think this is a "White people" thing to virtue signal. It's the "care is doing" thing you talked about and I have noticed.
I work with poor people in psychology. Where I'm at, there's a lot of black people and I am the only white person around most of the time. For decades, I have been the only white person. However, what would be the average remark made by white people if you criticized the lifestyle of blacks? It would be that they are a victim of circumstance and that you are bad person for criticizing them, even if you were directly helping.
It's typical of white people to be for "causes" but have comfortable lives where they don't actually do anything.
It was also pointed out that this climate change movement doesn't criticize Africa or China and they produce way more pollution than the US. That's because white, based on their own ethics, can't criticize nonwhites. So, attacks are only against other white.
To be honest, I think "virtue signaling" is a type of mating strategy!!
Things that get attention, such as singing, are a mating strategy. You will see that girls who "show off" in some way tend to attract males who have money, etc. Then, the female disappears afterwards. This happens to a lot of actresses and singers. There are almost NO MIDDLE AGED activists, vegetarians, etc in the media and few in real life. Once the person gets a pregnant, it's over.
So, I think maybe virtue signaling is a mating strategy for people who can't get attention through talent. They are trying to "show off" their qualities and become the center of attention for some reason. It is typically girls doing this and I believe it's to attract a mate.
Crazy, but think about it. You do not see many older people taking out causes and they logically should because they would have a lot more information and connections. It's younger people then the cause fades as they do once they do.

In the media maybe, but I was talking about it in general.
Regarding the media, there's lots of people who don't talk about these things but are still very famous and popular. That proves you don't HAVE to talk about these things.
So, what's the motive?
1. If they actually believe, that's okay. But, they then have to do, or they can't believe.
2. They announce stuff to virtue signal to gain something else, promotion for a movie, etc.
3. If their only talent is virtue signaling, then they are doing to promote themselves, and that's for mating, money, attention, etc.
I have lost count of the number of female singers and actresses I have liked who quite immediately once they get married. Their singing was a form of virtue signaling. Look, I am special and great now please buy me.
A lot of this stuff is a way for young people to promote their worth.
I think academia as well is as fearful of either label as any in the media. Also many politicians. But you still raise a good point.

White people run the media and will set out to destroy anyone who says anything racist. It's not Chinese organizations, it's white people.
White people love to battle and crush people. I know hundreds of black people and they would get mad at a racist then say something like, he needs to learn how to be a better person and hopefully this will be it. Meanwhile, white people will try to get you fired, they will try to ruin you in every way, even if you said something casually.
I view it as caveman behavior once again, regarding mating and that kind of thing. If you're old, you will be attacked less.
I'll point out people like Al Sharpton, and the NBPP. These are nothing but professional race-hustlers and shake-down artists Look what happened in the Duke lacrosse case, the Tawana Brawley hoax and others. These were not the work of Whites, but that of Black agitators that made a living out of exploiting fear. The media treated them with kid gloves, due to their championing what many believe are 'oppressed' people. In the Duke case, a full page ad was taken out in the local paper to condemn what Duke faculty saw as the behavior of rich, privileged White students towards a poor exploited Black woman.
The same mentality was at play in the UVA rape hoax, as well. People are afraid of being labeled as misogynists, racists, or homophobes, because not only does that label do damage, it also tends to stick even when it is not true. That is the fear that I mentioned earlier in this post.
This has happened to me. I'm old and I've been called a bigot many times. The charge has been made by some that I am mentally retarded as well. Usually, in fact, almost always, it's nothing more to discredit me by people who have no other argument to make.
It is quite often much more than simply trying to attract others.
Sure, there's some black organizations but they're even promoted by white people. They don't have their own news and TV channels. They are on there because white people want them on. If you notice, it's white people who will go to great lengths to destroy other white people.
This climate thing is a good example. Other white people jump on only other white people about using straws, what food they are eating, how they get to work, where they live, and so on. White people started the Civil War and freed the slaves, not black people. There were millions of black people slaves and they did NOTHING.
It's a white thing to be super competitive for attention, sex, and all of it.
