His Name's Pronunciation

Is the first part of his name pronounced 'may-er' like Bill Maher? Or is it pronounced 'may-her'? Or 'ma-her'? Other than not knowing how to pronounce the 'Maher' part of his name, it actually rolled off my tongue quite easily. Took 3 tries, but now I can say it just as easily as I would 'John' or 'Bob'. Seriously.

Dunno, but that's one long ass name.

reply

It's ma-her, it means "quickly" in Hebrew.

The internets says:

Pronunciation:
(mah her shal al hash baz

Isaiah's son was named Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz meaning “quick to the plunder, swift to the spoil” (8:3).

You are correct on both counts.

Interesting. I was wondering how to pronounce it. Certainly not a name one comes across every day.

No one I know with a name that long actually uses it day-to-day. Maybe his friends just call him Ma.

"Did you, did you need to hear their death agonies to know your... your omnipotence?"

reply

according to the 'bio' section on the page here his nickname is 'Ali'

so I'd imagine that that is why he took it as his stage name

reply

FYI Bill Maher is pronounced "marr" not "mayher."

reply

Pretty easy to pronounce

Maher-shala Ali

reply

Ali is not his nickname, it's the last name he adopted after converting to Islam.
