Morrissey Slams ‘The Simpsons’ for ‘Harshly Hateful’ Parody

Long whiney response in article. South Park should do an episode too.

While “The Simpsons”’ parody of a “depressed British singer from the 1980s” — clearly styled at least partially on erstwhile Smiths frontman Morrissey — has gotten rave reviews in many quarters, the man himself is apparently less than thrilled. The singer was satirized as an imaginary friend of Lisa Simpson’s named Quilloughby, from a fictional band called the Snuffs, who, like Morrissey, was a vegan with a quiff a glum outlook.

The character was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch; the episode was titled “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” in reference to the group’s 1986 single, and it features many references to the singer (an Oscar Wilde poster) and the Smiths’ album artwork.

Morrissey has made multiple questionable comments about race over the course of his career, particularly in recent years, in which he has supported a right-wing British political group, called Chinese people a “subspecies” and mocked London mayor Sadiq Khan’s accent.

Before the episode, show writer Tim Long said that Morrissey, Cure singer Robert Smith and Joy Division’s Ian Curtis were among the character’s inspirations.

Morrisey is PR savvy. If he said the characterization was funny or didn't mention it, he wouldn't be on the news cycle.

Same with Hank Azia. No one credible had a problem with Apu. But hank's $90,000,000 net worth isn't enough to keep his name in the news. He had to apologize.

As John Taylor (Duran Duran bassist) once observed: Once you get famous, you'll work harder to stay famous than you did to get famous.

Morrissey what? Is that his first or last name?

reply

Like Apu he has only one name!

Or Bono

I watched it, not as good as I expected. The Smiths broke up a couple years before The Simpsons started. Must have old writers!

The bad: It's a Lisa episode. Homer gets a big truck.
The good: Parody of a woke 80s musician. Too bad they don't parody today's wokies.

Can the Simpsons only reference extant pop bands?

I guess I should go and sell my DVDs from the show's heyday when the show might still have been relevant but devoting whole episodes to The Beatles. A band that had split up two decades prior.

How is it a parody of woke musician, when
Morissey, though definitely a freaking annoying vegan, isn't woke in any way? That's most likely the reason the show mocked him.
