"Dark Side of the Moon"
Okay, I'm home with the flu, and actually had nothing better to do than watch the "Wizard of Oz"/"Dark Side of the Moon" synch. It's on youtube.
Does anyone really like "DSotM"? Most of it's just background music.

Background/foreground is a state of mind.

(It's great but far from their best work.)
You sound like Paul McCartney. When DSoTM was going gangbusters back in the early 1970's he sat down to listen to it to see what all the fuss was about and he couldn't see/hear anything in it either. I thought then and still think now that it's a masterpiece.
I actually used to be a huge Floyd fan, and I hadn't heard "DSotM" in years (decades). Kind of a let-down, obviously. And I'm too old to pretend I like stuff that I don't.
I also listened to "Wish You Were Here", now that sucker holds up!
WYWH and Animals >
shareYes WYWH is a very good album as well but I still prefer DSoTM. If I want to listen to some Pink Floyd it will usually be either DSoTM or 'The Division Bell'.
IMHO, Floyd topped out with Meddle. Wish You Were Here could have been a great album but Waters had to start his bullshit there and it lead to two boring tracks that was nothing but bitching about being successful. If he really hated all of it that much he should have walked away from it in 73 and spared us from his "rich people suffer too" complex.
shareI LIKE PINK FLOYD,BUT HONESTLY IF I WERE TO PLAY THERE ALBUMS I WOULD END UP SKIPPING 3/4 OF IT.
shareDSOTM broke a record for staying on the top 100 album chart for over 4 years...
The question is, if released today and Pink Floyd was an unknown band...would it still be a hit?
The young generation in the 1970s sat back ,took drugs, plugged in this album and contemplated the Universe.
Today's youth mostly just check and update their Facebook page, so I don't think it will have the same appeal.
