He's too creative and artistic to be written off as a hack.

I totally understand why people bash his movies. He rehashes classic horror movies, keeps casting his wife, roots in favor of sociopaths and is trashy.

BUT...

He's a competent director and creative as freaking hell. I've only seen his movies once, but if I never see them again, I'll remember the set pieces and characters. You can hate his movies all you want, but the sets, sense of atmosphere, artistry and cinematography are definitely better than most.

reply

Nah, his movies are despicable and his music is even worse... sorry pal.

"He's a competent director and creative as freaking hell."

Yeah, obviously ripping off A Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the beginning of The Devil's Rejects is "very" creative. *eyes roll*

reply

When in Texas Chainsaw Massacre did the cops storm the house and attempt to capture the family of killers? I don't remember that happening in TCM at all. Did you actually see The Devil's Rejects?

reply

I thought it was clear that I was talking more about the setting and the atmosphere. But I give you that it wasn’t as obvious as I thought. Sorry about that.

Still, shitty movie filled with despicable characters.

reply

I see. I agree, despicable characters. Still, I looked at it more along the lines of homage, which Zombie has been very open and vocal about. DR has the best use of a soundtrack, I think, that I have ever seen. Particularly the end, with Freebird. That's one of those songs that if I ever hear it again, it will be too soon, but his use of it in the end of DR was brilliant. He took that long, boring song and made it awesome again. (Though I still turn it off when it comes on the radio, lol)

reply

''He took that long, boring song and made it awesome again.''

... Wut??? This song is amazing. oO I've seen Lynyrd Skynyrd live and Free Bird was the absolute best thing about the show. That instrumental second part is SO rousing. But well, I guess to each its own, just like I absolutely hate Rob Zombie's movies and would rather watch any Uwe Boll's or Michael Bay's movies anytime before even thinking about watching another Zombie's movie or, even less, rewatching one of those I've seen. That says a lot.

On another hand, I can say that the ending of DR with Free Bird is actually the best part of the movie to me for two reasons: 1- These scumbags get what they deserve and 2- Well, Free Bird lol.

Btw, if you want me to go into details about why I despise DR, I have no problem doing so.

WHITE ZOMBIE IS ONE AWESOME FUCKING BAND..

reply

You got that right. I bought “La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One” twice because I wore the first tape out. 👍

reply

He is creative, sure. I just watched 3 from Hell and maaaaaaaaan did it suck. Don't get me wrong, I am a die-hard fan of Corpses and Rejects, but he needs to stop. This movie shouldn't have been made. Weak script, gratuitous profanity (really got sick of the word mf-er), rehashing the same old stuff. Baby's character was really, really stupid. Bill was great of course, but had very little to work with. It had a couple good moments, but overall, I think he's lost it.

reply

I didn't see that one (3 from Hell) because I didn't like the Devil's Rejects. Having not seen that one, I have a feeling that the reason why it sucks is that he was trying hard to play it straight. Plus, they all obviously died in the second movie so what was up with resurrecting them in the third?

reply

They ALMOST died. Lol. They all survived. Capt Spaulding was executed in the beginning (probably because Sid was dying--he looked really bad). I loved DR. I think "playing it straight" was fine, for that movie. 1000 & DR are completely different. I can't say which I prefer, but if I had to choose I would say 1000. Still, DR is awesome.

This one he "plays straight" as well, but it's just....stupid. I hate to say it. Even stupider than Lords of Salem, which I tried really hard to like but it was just plain dumb. 31 was ok, not great. But 3 from Hell is a waste of time.

reply

If you thought 3 from hell was bad, try watching 31. 3 from hell is a masterpiece compared to 31.

reply

I would say that Rob Zombie is definitely unique, but not necessarily creative. I say this because his movies are like his music. He basically just re-hashes the same things over and over. If you have heard one Rob Zombie song, then you have pretty much heard them all. I feel almost the same way with his movies, although not quite as much as I do with his music. Just my opinion.

reply

Well, his storytelling is definitely derivative. It's the visuals that I'm talking about. No matter how corny or unoriginal his stories are, there are always a few set pieces and characters that are so interesting that they're unforgettable.

reply

I can't really argue against that point. I've seen many of his movies, and like you said, there are elements in each that are indeed unforgettable.

reply

As far as his visuals/directorial aesthetics go, he gets to moments of near genius, but it's always right around the corner from gross incompetence and the prosaic. I find it very frustrating.

reply

I personally think he just needs to direct. No more writing his own movies. That's where he goes wrong. I think he delivers some pretty powerful images and beautiful shots, they just exist in terrible stories filled with over the top hillbilly nonsense.

reply

You know, you are on to something here. There are always a couple scenes in his movies that make me think, "Why was that even necessary, and why use the f-bomb twenty six times in a twenty five word sentence?" You know? "Tutti f-ing Fruiti!" It was funny, but....I call these "jack off scenes" (but not for the reason one would probably thinks of when hearing "jack off"). Being a writer myself, I sometime catch myself being overly clever and cute, have to stop myself. Zombie should do this. So should Tarentino, now that I think about it.

reply

YEAH STOP IT WRITERS...WAIT,WTF DID YOU WRITE YINKY?

reply

Why, I have written everything. Don't you already know that?

reply

"Tutti f-ing Fruiti!" It was funny, but....

I actually never thought that was funny, for the same reasons you listed. Definitely that "being overly clever and cute"

reply

Happily, yinky is no longer here.

Fuck Rob Zombie up his dick with a steel, spiky dildo and NO lube. Now, THAT would be a movie!!

reply

Now if you would just dissapear...

reply

I’m still here, asshat.

reply

An interesting take for sure.

reply

He's a one-trick pony. If you've seen one RZ film, you've seen them all.

reply

The OP DELETED himself.

The OP is feckless. This topic is closed.

reply

You don't know that. He might have had some feck

reply

A director's only job is to deliver films on time and under budget. Anything else is subjective and meaningless.

reply

Does he only direct his own material? Most directors in the genre don't write.

reply

Yeah he's the writer on all his movies and he was producer on nearly all of them as well.

reply

He's a jack of all trades. Whether his products are not to every person's taste, he knows what he's doing.
