Neil Young’s Music Quietly Returns to Spotify

He told Spotify it “can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” Spotify chose Rogan and added that it hoped Young would return soon. He returned soon, indeed.

WOW. All that hoopla and in the end it all amounted to nothing.

Pretty much the exact definition of virtue signalling.

Those 3 fans are going to be psyched!

Why are there so many here at MC that must be unable to read?

Young, like so many others, have little power over if their music is or is not on Spotify - that decision is made by record labels and those with the rights to the music - oddly, this is something many of these artists have explained.

This fact has been widely reported on elsewhere.

Even people like Dylan, Springsteen and others lack the actual power to have their music removed from streaming platforms.

reply

Clearly Young had a lot of power over whether his music was on Spotify. He demanded the removal and both his label and the streaming service immediately honored the request. Apparently you can again get some of his music on Spotify despite his ultimatum that it was him or Rogan.

It's so ridiculous to talk about multimillionaire artists -- Neil Young sold the rights to his music for $150 million -- as making a noble sacrifice by taking his music off a platform when, it turns out, he couldn't even do this after selling out the rights.

At the end of the day a lot of his songs -- arguably his best -- are still on there. So his threat was ultimately an empty one he couldn’t fulfill. Basically he found a loophole so he & others like him (Joni Mitchell) can save face, make money thru a third party and get Leftie crusaders to praise them & shill for them.

reply

Completely incorrect report....the music that remains was never taken off and is only on there because of other reasons and is completely out of control of Young or his record label.

Even Foxnews has pointed this out....

reply

Only his solo work was removed?

reply

The music that is not controlled by his record label or others was not touched. For example, any of his music on things like compilation CDs or soundtracks is still there.

Nothing that he was able to have removed has been returned unlike the erroneous information in the OP.

reply

Finally, someone that can actually read.

It was never removed with his other stuff. These are shitty collaborations.

Far right news outlet spouting total shit as usual - as PROVEN by others in the thread.
What will the response to this rebuttal be ?

easy , either none , or :
buhht ...er, BIDEN dun sleepy
BLM looting"!

I concede the article I posted oversold what happened especially in using the verb “returned” when the music never actually left Spotify (as TruMovieFan and Rogue point out). But even MSN reported the primary point being made was at least partially correct. Several tracks and albums are available on the Spotify profiles for both Young and Joni Mitchell weeks after the artists said they would yank their entire catalogs. It does appear as stated above by Rogue and TruMovieFan that the items were distributed by labels other than Warner Brothers-Reprise, the most prominent label that handles their music. But even this is not uniform and some items remain available from Warner Brothers-Reprise. This is interesting because Young and Mitchell presented Spotify an ultimatum: Them or Joe Rogan. Spotify picked Rogan and both Young and Mitchell said they made good on the threat which has not turned out entirely true.

Fair point, well made 👍
