However, you made a valid point "most musicians have always hated Spotify before this even happened".
This "protest" really about the money, not the principle.
Aging rock stars (and non-stars like Nils Lofgren) have found a way to get their names out to two generations who know them as the parents' and grandparents' music. So now they generate new sales and streams on Apple, Amazon, and other streaming services. Good business plan.
