What's the difference between inclusion and "appropriation"?

For all of Jesse Williams' astute comments and observations in the press pieces and articles he's written, as well as those he made the other night at the BET awards, how do we distinguish between artistic/economic inclusion in the market place, and black art and culture being "appropriated" by the white power structure?

What's the difference, and how, specifically, do individual whites consciously avoid doing the latter?

(Basically any fashion or artform that black people claim, you aren't supposed to do. But of course, you still can because no one with any shred of logic actually gives a fvck) LOL

Well, we all--or should know--already what inclusion is, which really has nothing to do with appropriation. Appropriation is when white people monopolize anything black people created, and claim that they created it when they didn't. The thing that makes it wrong is when white folk copy off or take something black people have originally made, don't give them any credit for it, and getting more fame and credit for creating it then they actually deserve, along with more riches. That accounts for virtually all of American musical history up until about the '80s, when hip-hop came into being and into its own, claiming its own space within the musical landscape of that era.

Simple. When it comes to appropriation, just respect the culture that you like a particular part of (like pictures, food, music and fashion) don't take something from that culture, and twist it around into some "hipster" thing to wear one day, then cast off the next. Understand what it means, why it is what it is, and why it's important to the culture to begin with. After that, just enjoy it, and never forget where it came from. And be into the culture because you really want to be into it, not because it's the cool hip thing for you and your friends to like at the moment. Also respect the people of that culture and how they feel about certain aspects of it that are important to them---like why a lot of black folks appreciated Mr. Williams' speech, for example, lol.

Are you insane? Blacks had a big hand in some genres of music, but not all of them. And when has a white musician EVER denied the influence of blacks in American music? The Beatles, Elvis, etc have all said given full credit to the fact that black musicians were responsible for the creation of Rock n Roll.

You're living in a delusion racist fantasy world.

reply

Wow, activista, you are completely delusional. Respect what culture? White's need to respect white culture/inventions/language that blacks use? Rap, Pop, Hiphop were not just invented by blacks, neither was basketball, the language spoken on the street, rims, wearing gold chains, fried chicken, or clothing styles. Whites and Asians have invented, created, built, owned and put into production just about everything used in modern society whether in the hood or in cities so exactly who is copying who and needs to respect and give give credit for who. Whether it be the English language/Spanish language, most modern foods/dishes, automobile, computer, watches, phone, cell phone, radio, MP3 player, CD player, turntable, video game systems, microphones, modern architecture, cities, legal system, lights, Constitution, aircraft, helicopter, most sports/games, combustion engine, modern clothing, calculators, internet, firearms, US traditions, etc it was all created and invented and put into production by whites and asians so how can you possibly say whites steal from blacks when whites and asians are the ones who have created literally everything used by blacks and other races in America and around the world. Should people like Russel Simmons, Oprah, Jay Z, and others have to give credit to whites for dressing in white created styles, speaking a white language, driving white created automobiles, flying on aircraft created by whites, using white and asian created machines, etc. Check the owner of Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, Timberland clothing, etc, they are all white. Until whites start dressing in native African tribe garb, speaking native African languages, singing traditional African songs, opening up native African restaurants with African food whites don't owe anything or have to give props to blacks creating anything because whites have stole nothing from the black community, you have to be the original inventor, creator, producer of something for someone to steal from.

"Simple" ?? That doesn't sound simple at all (nor is it supposed to, I'd wager).

Oh, I see--you're one of these stupid-a** delusional racists who think only white people created everything, totally ignoring the fact that they stole a lot from everybody everywhere they invaded? Keep believing that bull**** if you want. And the reality is, neither rock 'n roll, nor jazz, would have been invented without black people, period. I'm done talking--tired of telling idiots like you to do the research. White people didn't create everything in this country, let alone the whole damn world---that is some bull**** only racist bastards like you believe that s***.
