Clarence Williams III was one hell of an actor. The Mod Squad as Link, a dignified Black man in the 60s? Purple Rain, as Prince’s flawed but oh-so-human father? 52 Pick-Up, as Bobby Shy, 1 of the extortionists? Col. George Fowler in The General’s Daughter? And this is not exhaustive as a list. This man deserves some RESPECT! With his shy smile and dignified presence, he was a ground-breaker. Not a Sidney Poitier, but perhaps more important: a solid supporting actor who could assume many roles, making actors “of color” pervasive in entertainment’s casting system, but not as subservient characters; rather as dynamic presences.
