Why Is He A One-Hit Wonder

He's a one-hit wonder of the 1980's because of Break My Stride (and The Kids American), from the album I Don't Speak The Language. He was able to return with the album Bouncin' Off The Walls, but it didn't chart (neither did the song of the same name). I do know that he did contribute to the Disney's Mulan soundtrack.

Even though his songs are awesome, how come he is mostly a songwriter nowadays?
