US denounces Roger Waters performance in Berlin as antisemitic

The Biden administration is weighing in on the controversy over Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters, saying his recent performances in Germany were antisemitic, an assessment shared by many in Israel and the pro-Israel community.

Waters rejected those accusations in a statement on Facebook and Instagram, saying “the elements of my performance that have been questioned are quite clearly a statement in opposition to fascism, injustice, and bigotry in all its forms.”

He isn't antisemitic, very far from it. If you take a good look at the setup and listen to the song, you will see that he's actually taking the piss out of the Nazi's you fucking muppets.

That song and setup has been in the Pink Floyd act since 'The Wall' tour started in 1980, and not a word has been said about that song and setup in all those years, until now, because the namby-pamby snowflake lefties and liberals are offended by it.

Go fuck yourselves. Keep it up Roger, and don't let the Snowflake Wokies grind you down.

The irony here is that Roger *is* a militant lefty (far more than the people criticising him). It's mostly the centre and the political right who are taking the greatest umbrage here (which is not to say that there aren't those of us on the left who are both highly critical of Israel *and* disturbed by anti-Semitic tropes and imagery).

reply

What an idiot.

The sad thing is, certain people will attack Roger Waters whatever he does, simply because he questions Israel's treatment of the Palestinians, which is a perfectly valid and integral stance to take, but by dressing up as a Nazi and apparently mocking the Holocaust (in Germany of all places), he only provides ammunition to his critics, and thus distorts and degrades the Palestinian cause ("Oh, they're all anti-Semites, so let's not bother treating Israel's abuses seriously.")

Sadly, there are a lot of bad faith *militants* on both sides of the debate, and, alas, they're the ones who are given the most attention and coverage.

As said above, this part of The Wall didn't raise a lot of ire 40 years ago when it was first released. It's only in the last decade or so since Waters has become more vocal in his opposition to Israel's policy towards Palenstinians that the crys of "anti-semitism" have gotten louder.

But at the same time, you don't see Waters saying much about the additudes of (some) Muslims/Palenstians towards Jews either.

So a guy with blue hair wearing a toilet on his head is art but this true musical genius is antisemetic?

Uh huh.

I guess they never listened to The Wall or the Final Cut.

reply

“The Biden Administration”

Lmfao!!!

Oh no did the shitting President weigh in?

reply

Don't agree with Waters' recent turn as a shill for Putin, but as his fans know he has been doing this same act since in 1977 and it is anti-nazi.

reply

There seems to be a lot of bad faith on both sides, as one often finds when the Arab-Israeli issue rears its ugly head.

On one hand, some of Waters' critics will use anything they can to smear him, and, as you say, Pink Floyd has been using fascist iconography to *attack* fascism for decades, and before Waters became heavily involved in the pro-Palestinian cause.

On the other hand, Waters has unnecessarily created a rod for his own back by persistently likening Israel to Nazi Germany, rather than simply attacking the Israeli regime on its own terms (surely he must know that people will switch off/turn against anything he says, as soon as he compares a country built and still inhabited by many Holocaust survivors, to the people who persecuted them).

reply

I love Pink Floyd. Not a fan of Waters himself. But I'm assuming this was something from The Wall. In which case, context counts. Sounds like these condemning idiots didn't bother to do just a little digging.

reply

As usual, some nuance and thought would be welcome, over bellyaching and political posturing. Unfortunately, I can't help thinking that there are people on both sides of the argument trying to troll the other, to the point where it becomes impossible to discern who is and isn't acting in good faith.

Who gives a shit? This is all Biden has to do???
