The only thing we can hope for was that he was unconscious and never woke up. I think the fact that he had scant soot in his lungs and that he died rapidly (according to the reports) points to that.

According to police report he died from a combination of injuries from the crash and fire.

In order to have smoke in your lungs you have to be breathing smoke at the time of death, however that doesn't mean he was conscious. Its most likely that based on the damage done he would have been knocked out from the trauma of the crash and he died from the fire, but he very well may not have survived even without the fire. This was a terrible loss. Not because of his acting abilities, but because he was a truly great person.
