Arrival is a Masterpiece

A masterpiece. A subtle, nuanced film in an elliptical structure.
The film has a cumulative, resonating emotional power.
If people want a shoot 'em up tacky mainstream derivative blockbuster, the equivalent of junk food, go elsewhere.
Villeneuve's Sicario is a masterpiece and he improves.
A director and story-teller at the apotheosis of his career.

Semper Fidelis.

Denis Villeneuve's duo of Sicario and Arrival is the greatest directing genius since Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982).

Okay let's not get carried away here. Sicario and Arrival are two very finely crafted films but it's a bit too much to call them masterpieces. I felt Arrival had much originality going for it right up until the last 20 minutes where it basically became Interstellar. The big finale ended up losing impact on me. I wanted to be mindblown but that non-linear time thing and sending a message from the future/past to save humanity had already been introduced to me from Interstellar, so this just ended up feeling like a copycat of that. "But it wasn't meeting them... it was meeting you." ugh... Anyhow good film 8/10.

Both Sicario and Arrival are as far from being masterpieces as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are far from being trash.

If you think it's a joke I'm really sorry for your taste.

Pity you because you are a popcorn audience. So you never understand what cinema it is. And it's not a joke.

And I'm totally happy not to understand what film it is or what it is about, because I have a lot of films which are actually potentially interesting in my watch list. I don't want to delve into borefests like Arrival which lies to the people about them being sci-fies while truly they are not more than a dramas with pretentious directorial style.
