Arrival looks stunningly amazing. I have nervous feelings but hope for his sequel to Blade Runner.
If he does get the rights to Dune, he should do it like the Hobbit with the novel being divided into three movies or a trilogy. Dune is such a breathtakingly dense story, especially if he intends to do the other novels. If he could get Ridley Scott to help him out somehow, maybe with script or producing, I think it would be nice closure for Ridley.
Personally, I would think Luke Scott would be a great choice to direct Dune since his father is Ridley Scott, but since Dune is such a beloved classic, it should have a more established director helming it. Villeneuve looks like he may be that established director, if Arrival and Blade Runner 2 are successful, and he has several big hits under his belt already like Sicario and Prisoners, both of which I have heard are incredible.
I'm only a little bummed by the news that he wants to do Dune because it looks like mister Villeneuve would make a technical film, not a spiritual film like Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune attempt. However, why does it have to be either Technical or Spiritual? Why can't it be both a technical film and a spiritual film, which is certainly how I think Dune should be done. If possible, could he get some of Jodo and Moebius' storyboards for Dune also? Or could he get Michel Seydoux to help produce the film along with Scott Free Productions? That would be a dream come true.
