He will direct DUNE

The son of Frank Herbert say it's official.

I don't understand why anyone wants a Dune movie. While I appreciate Frank Herbert's world-building and his attempt to create a metaphor of the environment, misuse of religion, etc., the story is unnecessarily convoluted and just plan dull.

Denis Villeneuve is a fine director with a good sense for realism, mood and getting good performances out of well chosen actors. He's probably the best possible choice right now for "Dune", which is a fantastic world that needs to be grounded in realism, not the fairy tale style the other directors used before.

Herbert's books are great because he makes you believe that such a world could exist somewhere and a successful adaptation must create the same effect. That said, Villeneuve's last three films all lacked in the screenplay department:

"Prisoners" had a ridiculous ending and a villain without a sound motivation. "Sicario" had some plot holes and after an exciting start ended like a "Death Wish" sequel. "Arrival" has great style and an awesome first act, but after that it becomes a pretty cheesy and not-so-original update of very old SciFi elements that go back to "The Day the Earth Stood Still". All three films simply suffer from screenplays that still needed some work.

I hope he won't make the same mistake again. He needs to stay close to Herbert, cut out some cheesy stuff and add as much realism as he can - while staying close to the spirit of it.

His "Dune" could become as big as "Avatar" or "The Lord of the Rings"...
