Perception of height in movies or on TV is smoke and mirrors. A person can look taller than they are if their body type is that they have long legs. Much of it depends on the people that they are cast with. If a show is using a major star that is tall (like Nicole Kidman) it is most likely that the costars will be taller too, if it is an important issue to the story (i.e. Hugh Jackman - "Australia" - is over 6'1"). If it is not as important to the characters relationship someone shorter like Sean Penn (costar in "The Interpreter")is fine. And, in the old days an actor like Alan Ladd who was 5'6", often got to either stand on a box beside his costar for the shot, or, the costar would stand in a trench that was dug to be the exact number of inches that they wanted. The industry is very devious in dealing with the height issue.
