Trump's Response to the New Zealand Terrorist Attacks

"My warmest sympathy and best wishes goes out to the people of New Zealand after the horrible massacre in the Mosques. 49 innocent people have so senselessly died, with so many more seriously injured. The U.S. stands by New Zealand for anything we can do. God bless all!"

To be honest, I can't fault anything about this Tweet. For once he has used the right words.

A blind man can see those are not his words. Never in a million years did he write that Tweet - and probably doesn't even know it went out on his behalf.

Jussie...Jussie

reply

Desperation of the trolls

reply

I dunno , the bad grammar "god bless all" bit smells a bit trumpy

reply

The "My warmest sympathy and best wishes goes out to the people of New Zealand after the horrible massacre in the Mosques. 49 innocent people have so senselessly died, with so many more seriously injured. The U.S. stands by New Zealand for anything we can do." does not smell t-rumpy at all.

reply

He probably didn't even know what happened in New Zealand!

reply

He probably couldn’t find New Zealand on a map if a neon orange arrow was pointing to it.

reply

You got that right!!!

reply

Just stop...now is not the time.

reply

The right words include "I condemn all acts of terrorism" or "I condemn all acts of terrorism and this was an act of terrorism", which are missing from the tweet.

Yep:

_________
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the incident was a "terrorist act."

"What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence," Ardern added on Twitter. "It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities — New Zealand is their home — they are us. The person who has committed this violent act has no place here."

https://twitter.com/guardian/status/1106508572777693184

British Prime Minister Theresa May referred to the shooting as a "horrifying terrorist attack."

https://twitter.com/theresa_may/status/1106461659856551936

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed solidarity with "citizens who were attacked and murdered out of racist hatred," adding, "we stand together against such acts of terrorism."

https://twitter.com/RegSprecher/status/1106478321259429893

Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron in a tweet said, "France stands against all forms of extremism and acts with its partners against terrorism in the world."

https://twitter.com/EmmanuelMacron/status/1106483742326050817

Trump has reacted to other acts of violence in far more explicit terms when less evidence was available. As the London police were still investigating an incident involving a car crash outside Parliament in August, for example, Trump tweeted, "Another terrorist attack in London...These animals are crazy and must be dealt with through toughness and strength!"

In 2017, May criticized Trump over tweets he sent about a bomb on a London Underground train. Trump had tweeted that those responsible were "loser terrorists" and "sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard." Local authorities were still investigating the incident at the time, prompting May to rebuke Trump.

True, but by Trump's standards this Tweet struck a surprisingly sympathetic tone.

But the truth is that Trump and his eldest son's rhetoric and persistent demonisation of Muslims has helped lead to this shocking act of anti-Muslim terrorism, so I don't pretend that Trump isn't part of the problem.

I was just surprised that for once Trump made a Tweet that was mostly agreeable.

reply

Of course he ends it with a god bless.

reply

I don't have a problem with that.

Bear in mind that the victims all, presumably, believed in God (and perhaps Trump thinks differently, but I tend to believe that Muslims and Christians ultimately worship the same God, albeit one who goes by different names).

I would have preferred that he had directly referred to Muslims as the victims, but I suppose he couldn't avoid referring to the venue of these hateful acts of terrorism, mosques.

reply

Maybe if he didn't surround that message with half a dozen "Me Me! ME!" tweets today - including messages where he called Democrats Jew haters & baby killers.

Meanwhile today, Rep Louis Gohmert blames the NZ attack on "Muslim controversies" in the past. By that GOPrick logic, do Muslims now have cause or reason to attack "Christian" people in retaliation?

Gohmert's mentality is one of never-ending bullshit & hate, & there's no question that t-RU-mp influenced this murdering terrorist.

reply

Without blaming Trump directly for the actions of sick and twisted terrorists, I do agree that his rhetoric and that of his son, among others on the political right, and a good portion of the media, has helped enable acts of Islamophobic violence like this slaughter.

If extremist Islamic preachers can be held in part responsible for terrorism committed on behalf of self-identifying Muslims, the same can be said of Trump and co for terrorist acts committed by Islsmophobes against Muslims.

reply

The bastard didn't write and tweet this, someone else did it for him. If want to truly know how he feels, listen to that stupid press conference he had. He sees no problem with white nationalism and extremism.

reply

You're probably right. I was just shocked to see a semi-reasonable and on-message Tweet emerge from Trump's account for once.

reply

he made no sympathetic gesture against the muslims. just paid condolences to the white government.

reply

No, but it is a liberal white government, and he did mention that this senseless massacre took place at mosques. Admittedly, he didn't specifically cite the victims' religion, but I'm amazed that he even acknowledged that the killing took place at mosques in view of Trump's past attempts to entirely whitewash Islamophobic violence.

reply

i feel like he acknowledges that something bad happened in mosques and pays condolences to the gov that it happened. no sympathy to the muslims.

reply

He does mention the senseless death of 49 innocents.

I'm not praising Trump here. The man is a louse, and it's partly his Islamophobic rhetoric that has facilitated these violent acts. I'm just saying that by his, admittedly low, standards, this Tweet was surprisingly sound. If he always spoke like this it would be a good thing. The problem is this Tweet is the very rare exception, and 99% of the time his Tweets are full of petty and vile abuse.

reply

It's obvious that someone took Trump's phone and tweeted the message while he was taking a shower. Trump's real message was about how white nationalism isn't a rising threat.
