Judge orders removal of 'citizenship' question from 2020 Census, a defeat to T-rump

In a 277-page opinion, a federal judge has ordered the removal of a question about citizenship from the 2020 census, striking a major blow to T-rump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Judge Jesse Furman of the Southern District of New York fired off a scathing, lengthy opinion that tore apart both the question itself and the illegal process by which it was added to the census. He found that Ross lied about why the change was needed, went against the law on making the changes, and illegally went against the opinion of the Census Bureau itself, which urged him not to do it.

As as the Trump administration admitted, such a controversial question would discourage undocumented immigrants and their families from answering the census, which would lead to slanted political districts and budget allocations, both of which are based on total population (not the number of citizens).

Before 1960, the question was, in fact, asked in each Census taking since 1820. Yet before the census was taken in 1960, the Census Bureau had eliminated it from their questionnaire, concluding that the question led to an inaccurate count of how many people resided in the U.S.

Surprisingly, in March 2018, Ross announced the question was going to be reintroduced to the 2020 Census, after a 60 year absence.

Republicans trying to cheat Democratic areas out of representation. What else is new with them?

reply

I’m sure this decision will be appealed. Too much is at stake for the republicans.
