General Mattis resigns as Secretary of Defense

Another one bites the dust and I'm guessing few republicans will see this one as a positive. Donald Trump's twitter feed frames this as Mattis retiring but the letter of resignation Mattis submitted paints a far different picture and it's hard to see this an anything other than motivated by Trump's decision to withdraw the troops from Syria.

This is terrifying development.

Mattis was voice of sanity holding Trump back from his desire to invade Venezuela as reported all over the news last summer. Trump's inner war monger uncaged on the world is really bad for the world and really bad for us.

We have to hope whoever replaces him is sane.

We have to hope whoever replaces him is sane.

I wouldn't bet on it for two reasons:

1) Trump seems to be acting more erratic and irrational as time goes on, and..

2) Fewer and fewer sane people seem to want to join this administration. The idea that people were turning down the chance to be White House chief of staff blows my mind but that was seemingly the case.

So yeah, I'd say terrifying is a good way to look at this development.

I still maintain that the most terrifying thing of all has and WILL always be this: this guy has 30 million supporters who are 110% unwavering in their support of him NO MATTER WHAT he ever does. That's the truly frightening part--that THAT man stupid/easily-duped/insane Americans are among us.

I also think it's troubling that millions support him no matter what, but I'd be careful of writing them off as easily duped and stupid. Many of them know full well he is a liar and a fraud but they like his agenda and simply don't care about his bad behavior. In fact I think many of them actually enjoy this because they see it as simply trolling the establishment, especially liberal members of it. What I don't think they're realizing is the long term damage this President is likely doing to the conservative ideology (and possibly our country) and ultimately this presidency will backfire on them (and already has begun with Dems taking back The House). He has awoken a dormant block of voters who are paying attention to the political scene for the first time and in the GOP they are seeing a party that has shown itself to be largely spineless in standing up against Trump's irrational behavior and almost constant lying. Trump very possibly is going down and if so he's taking a lot of people with him.

reply

If that happens I have my fingers crossed that he takes Mitch McConnell down with him. Him and his entire evil cabal of corruption apologists. The man is an unprincipled abomination.

reply

Oh let that happen!!! Please!

reply

Well said. I think you're right. It would explain why most of his supporters online are trolls as well, really.

Oh, GOD, I hope he goes down...

reply

Well, at least he's still on the job until late February. That gives us a couple months to prepare for armageddon. :(

reply

If he’s replaced- and that’s a big if.

We have an increasingly unhinged near-dictator running a-muck and over 30 million simpletons firmly standing by his every action. We're in big trouble...
