So, I joined this forum to speak about movies, and maybe, maybe actors in particular or directors, but movie industry related topics.
I do not agree or disagree with Trump's politics, and could not care less (I'm not even American) but I personally find it quite annoying to see his picture every day as the most popular topic on this forum...
For the love of god what relation has the current president of the USA in a Movie Forum...
I've never seen Marlon Brandon, Hitchcock or Daniel Day-Lewis trending threads but I see every day Donald Trump. It's not a politics forum guys. I would say the same thing if it were Macron, Obama or Justin Trudeau.
That's because he's playing a much more important role right now. Conversations on this website are not restricted to what the person has done in the entertainment field but is open to anything at all about the person.
First of all, I just wanted to say that I applaud you for using the term "could not care less" properly. You're the first person I've seen use this term properly online in MONTHS. Most people always say "I could care less" and it just drives me up a wall. So, thank you for that. :)
As for your question--I understand that you're not American, but are you aware of the MASSIVE amount of controversy surrounding Trump? He's arguably the most controversial president we've had in decades--maybe even in HISTORY. He just so happened to have a few movie roles (mostly cameos) which is why he was included on this board.
Given the fact that he's the most controversial president we've had in ages, of course his role as president will be discussed more than his meaningless cameos.
Not all of us want to join political forums (I sure as hell don't want to set foot anywhere near one) so this is a forum where us casuals who still want to talk about Trump while avoiding those political sites can gather and discuss him. It's that simple.
I could not care less all the time dteam!! I accuse others of not being able to care less as well. Do you think people who misuse that term knowingly do so and just couldn't care less? Are they ignorant of the true term? If done knowingly then why don't they ever bother to specify what exactly it is that they could care less than?
As for Trump on the movie chat boards: I come for the laughs but as an avid lurker I get a lot of insight as well. I can see having no interest in discussing politics on an entertainment forum. What I don't get is what makes it so difficult to simply skip over his orange picture and get on with it.
That said, I do so wish this site had the traffic imdb had on the boards. If it did this wouldn't be a discussion.
At the risk of giving people too much credit (I have a tendency to do that, often to my own detriment), I'm assuming many people are just misusing the term as slang. But, like I said, I give people the benefit of the doubt far more often than I should. I used to give people crap for using the word "irregardless" and wound up discovering later on that it is, indeed, a real word.
Yes, if this place had IMDB traffic people like the OP probably wouldn't bring it up. IMDB was chock full of celebrity boards that carried heavy discussions about anything BUT their movies and was considered normal practice there.
While this place will never be IMDB, it's about the closest alternative I've found out there. Still, I do miss the good old days, trolls and all...
I used to give people crap for using the word "irregardless" and wound up discovering later on that it is, indeed, a real word.
I find this oddly disturbing to learn. Webster's of 1983 suggests that it's c.1912 and probably came into being as a blend between irrespective and regardless, but it's meaning is simply: REGARDLESS.
I wish they'd have cited a reference for this 1912 irregardless. It's probably from a well selling novel with a semi literate character who simply can't remember the actual pronunciation of words he shouldn't be using without a bit of research.
My Webster's doesn't have bae.
We don't use ye either, which makes zero sense. There's no suitable replacement for it. you guys. you all. yous. LOL
Moviechat was created to take the place of the old IMDB forums. Moviechat was even able to get their hands on some of IMDB's old archived posts. Since discussions of politics were extremely common there, it only makes sense it would happen here too. It doesn't make sense for those discussions to go away simply because of Moviechat's feature of showing recently discussed topics on its front page.
I didn't notice so much trolling at imdb, although I'm well aware of it. The only real stand out memory I have of a troll was on the Dark Shadows board, LOL. This guy and his socks were NUTS. Those people over there are hard core DS fans and some of them worked on the show, lol. I would go occasionally with questions about Willy or Barnabas.. One epic meltdown was over a question I had about Barnabas' coffin and why it was so far away in the crypt out in the Collins graveyard. It was suggested that there were actually two coffins as there was also one in Barnabas' parlour. That really pushed some people over the edge.
Well, most of the boards I occupied over there were absolutely crawling with trolls. Some examples are: Terminator Salvation (that one actually caused IMDB to institute new policies about flooding the boards, if I remember), Batman vs. Superman, Breaking Bad with its wannabe ganster trolls, Star Wars Episodes 7 and 8, Ghostbusters 2016, to name a few. Those were pretty bad.
Indeed. One or two of them followed us over here to moviechat and one of them still stalks me every now and then and keeps harping on the fact that I married an immigrant.
There's another one who hasn't been seen for a while but usually "teams up" with the other stalker. Could be the same poster.
There were a lot of trolls on the Obama board, though I'd say more than half of them disappeared after his 2012 re-election.
What irks me isn't so much the number of trolls here, but their unwillingness to articulate a point. On the IMDB Obama board, they would at least attempt to argue their position, which would eventually lead them to a dead end. Here, they either never reply to you, or just immediately give up and admit they are trolling with their "haha, Hillary lost" routine. Or you get the lamest reply in existence, the "I never supported Trump to begin with."
He's acting right now, so it still counts. What he's doing currently is a long-game performance art piece where he pretends to be a blundering yet blustery President who is secretly a spy for the Kremlin.
It's the people with the smallest grasp of politics who post the majority of the posts here. I assume they know they would get ripped apart in a group full of politically intellectual people. On this page, they can can troll or be controversial with people that are most likely more casually informed about or even completely unexpecting political discussion. Unfortunately, this perpetuates the original posters desire to continue, because it's relatively easy pickings.
