Why are Puerto Ricans considered American?

When India was a colony of England, we did not go out of our way to consider Indians to be "Englishmen". Indians did not even want to be seen that way. They were proud of being Indian.

Liberals are aggressively concerned about Puerto Rico lately. But Puerto Rico has twice the obesity rate of Mississippi, 10 times the teen pregnancy rate, 10 times the debt, 200 times the violence, etc... Mississippi is seen as an outlier, but Puerto Rico is in another league. Liberals like to compare red states and blue states to prove that red states are bad. But they always forget about Puerto Rico. It's the reverse of forgetting about Asians when talking about white privilidge.

America is the reason Puerto Rico is as good as it is and liberals know this. If we gave them independence which they don't want, they would slide down to the level of Honduras, or Trinidad and compete for IMF lifetime membership award. I still support independence on principle. It is not our job to hold them up. Colonialism is a moral hazard and we see that with liberals pushing for bailouts. America will always be condemned for not doing enough even when we enable them by doing too much, because that's the scam.

So what you're saying is you need a tutor in the tough US History class you're taking in High School?

Let's find you a tutor....

Ahh! Let's Ask Ainsley Earhardt at FOX & FRIENDS to tutor you and her other viewers...

No wait, she's not too bright in the subject of history either. She praised Americans for their triumph over "Communist Japan" in WWII.

We'll find you a tutor so you can pass that difficult US History test next week!

According to the Washington Post. .. Congress did give Puerto Ricans official citizenship under the Jones-Shafroth Act of 1917. But to this day, Puerto Ricans continue to be subjects of the United States without a right to vote for the president, without voting representation in Congress and without equal treatment compared with citizens born or naturalized in the United States. The Supreme Court has yet to decide whether the statutory citizenship that Puerto Ricans possess is equivalent to U.S. citizenship — including guarantees of equal protection laid out in the 14th Amendment.

Puerto Rico was supposed to be on its way to becoming a US state nut not sure why it never did. I don't think anyones ever really considered the status of Puerto Rican citizen status. I may be mistaken but from what I've been taught was that Peurto Ricans are american they just don't have the same political representation due to their hesitation of become a full fledged state which I am also lead to believe has been the puetro rican decision so far.

Puerto Ricans prefer to remain a commonwealth. They can vote for president if they live on the mainland. Ditto Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa.

BTW, people in Washington D.C. can't vote for their own senator or congress rep.

There is plenty of taxation without representation going around in the U.S.

I don't know DC feels more like a city and I'd think it would be overkill to give a city its own state hood senators. But something is amiss in DC considering how how the average sallery is yet crime has historically been pretty high in DC. Well the crime was shown to be high when I was in highschool. I've never seen such a high income area be such a ceaspool of crime.

Washington D.C. is a district - not city. They can vote for a congress rep. who has no voting rights, therefore no power.

I live in a city, but I can vote for my congress rep. who represents my neighborhood and surrounding areas and senator.

Are you talking about street crime or the crime committed by all the politicians aka: swamp?

reply

yea I know that but it feels like a small City so It doesn't feel like it should have 2 senators all on its own. I was reffering mostly to street crime. I know the politicians do what is considered illegal acts but since they always find ways to avoid prosecution their crimes can be spun as non crimes I'm not saying I endorse this just that its hard to measure political crime because of their seeming immunity to it. But that seems to ne the nature of high end white collar crime im general :(. I'm just shocked about the level of violence Washington DC had during my younger years. The early to mid 1990s.

Why are you considered "human"?

reply

Lol!

reply

It has to do with their commonwealth status as a US territory.

According to Ainsley Earhardt at FOX & FRIENDS, we took over communist Puerto Rico when we went to war with them in the 1300s. Sean Hannity backed her up on this.

I doubt that you know anything about The Jones Act which artificially increases the cost of goods in Puerto Rico thereby increasing the debt and impoverishing the people. The law was created by a sleazy senator to help create a shipping monopoly for Washington state which had a large shipping industry.

It basically states that a foreign ship can't bring its products directly to a Puerto Rican port. The ship has to go to a mainland port and then transfer its goods to an American ship which then travels to the Puerto Rican port. This stupid law should have been rescinded a long time ago.
