Colonial Penn

How do we feel about celebrity endorsements? I see AT a lot pushing life insurance. Not sure how I feel about it. Having insurance is a good thing, but there are so many death benefit plans out there, something seems off about it. And then, a very likable guy like Alex is urging you to give Colonial Penn your money, it seems like a lot of people would trust him and be motivated to buy that insurance. Can we trust him or is he just a shill getting paid? Doesn't he make enough from Jeopardy?

reply

He makes 10 million a year for hosting Jeopardy! I'm kind of doubting that he's paying for his own life insurance with that too.

Mostly I wonder if we should look at Alex a little differently because of the CP angle. I really like the guy, but this makes me wonder if he's just like every other corporate shill, i.e., selling himself and just doing it for more filthy lucre.

reply

It could be. I have to say that maybe he's signing off these checks for something/someone else and really doesn't see the money.

I guess it's a weird place to be; being desirable and having people wanting to give you money to advertise products you don't/wouldn't use but realizing someone is going to get that check if it's not you. If I didn't think the product was a scam I would be willing to do it and I'd likely donate the money in some fashion. I wouldn't call it a virtuous thing to do but I don't think it's unethical at the same time.

Sometimes I think it's funny when people who are already rich do commercials or projects simply to make them more money. Like George Clooney. He and Andy Garcia were in a coffee commercial not too long ago, and I saw a picture of him at the liquor store (we have these here, the only place you can buy hard liquor) endorsing some kind of booze. I like Clooney, but sometimes I chuckle at the rapaciousness of it all.
